Some hotel nightstands looking beyond the Bible

America’s growing interest in religous diversification is also effecting hotel bibles. The Gideon Bible once a de facto standard for placement in hotels is now facing competition or replacement from other religious texts. USA Today has this story.
And as the beleaguered hotel industry struggles to lure loyal guests,, the Borgata’s ecumenical move could signal a trend, says Chekitan Dev, professor at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration. The Gideon Bible has become “an unwitting brand standard,” Dev says. “The key is to give guests options. Along with a room-service menu, you could even offer a ‘religion menu.’ “
Founded by three Wisconsin-based traveling salesmen in 1899, the 236,000-member Gideons International distributes more than 60 million Bibles each year to hotels, schools, prisons and other facilities in 178 countries. That’s an average of 112 placements a minute, boasts the Gideons Web site which includes testimonials from travelers who have found spiritual sustenance in their hotel nightstands.
Gerald Zelizer, a rabbi from Metuchen, N.J. has this to say in the USA Today Article
…hoteliers still follow “an antiquated religious road map,” Zelizer says. He suggests that hotel chains meet with leaders of several faiths to determine which religious texts or symbols would be most useful to guests.But reaching out has its potential drawbacks, he says: “There are so many variables that you could fill the room with religious paraphernalia and wind up with nowhere to sleep.”

Over the last 8 nonths I have stayed in many hotel in the UK, on Sunday night I was on my own as my room mate had stayed in the bar longer than she should. I really couldn’t be bothered to read one of my magazines, so I picked up the Gideons Bible from the bedside table, as I started from the first page I became entrigued and read further, also thinking to myself I would like to take this with me, but something stopped me putting it in my suitcase, I now know that I can take one without it being stealing. I can’t wait to get my hands on one

please sir it’s me mumin iam in a risk countery {somalia} and i am one of the Leonella’s student who died in mogadishu somalia sister Leonella was really a very kind woman she was redy to help the poor people in every countery in every way.although i interst to becom a christian even when i was young i display to sister Leonella what i wnt at that time fortunately she accept what my opinion then started to preeching me every morning.
she order me to com early in the morning every day so as to preech me {may GOD blees her} before class or before student not com for 8 months i was a nursing community health student and a christian Leonella’s student.i was really feeling very pleasure not knowing any one.
unfortunately in 17 september some people who were claiming that they maslim[terirism] shot our pleasure Leonella but before she died she used to give or warning me to connect the world if she died i can say my self there were a connection between her and the lord.
after she die i really tired to conect all over the world even some phones that i got in the internet although i am poor and cant aford to call or to spend so much money then i tried.there were no answer now you kind please be kind tome accept to my request.GOD may bless you.
