Revolve - Bible given fashion makeover to lure teen girls
Posted on September 1st, 2003 by Anthony K. Valley
More coverage on “Revolve”, the slick teen magazine version of the New Testament. Not everyone cares for this presentation of the Word of God. Some are concerned that it may trivialize the scripture or skew its meaning. Others are more positive, simply because it encourages teen girls to read the bible.
Where are teenage girls turning for advice about fashion, dating and getting along with their parents? Would you believe, the New Testament?
After years of trying to sell Bibles to one of the nation’s savviest and most cynical consumer groups, Bible publishers at Thomas Nelson have developed a new way to snare adolescents’ interest: turning the sacred book into a magazine.
“Revolve,” the new Bible for girls between the ages of 12 and 17, offers the complete New Testament in a fashion-magazine format, replete with images of stylish, smiling young women, quizzes and celebrity birthdays (sorry, no horoscopes).
...
When the product suits them, adolescents have proven to be avid Bible buyers. The Extreme Teen Bible, which Thomas Nelson published in 1999, sold more than 800,000 copies in four years. The average Bible sells 40,000 copies a year, said Etue.
Study Bibles and other Bibles directed at teens account for 25 percent of all sales at Family Christian Stores, a chain with more than 315 outlets nationwide that recently started selling “Revolve.”
...
Parents who ask their teenagers what part of the Bible engaged them most might be surprised to hear them cite the sections where “guys say what they like about girls.” Would that be Peter’s letter advising women not to braid their hair, decorate themselves with gold or wear expensive robes? No, it’s “Guys Speak Out,” a serial sidebar in “Revolve” featuring teenage boys’ thoughts on how girls should dress and behave.

I would like a copy of the magazine. I’m in Charleston, SC and haven’t been able to find it. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Susan
Hey! I was just wondering what all this was about and I would really enjoy reading something like this! It’s tough being a teenage girl Christian because we don’t want to be “unfashionable” yet we want to honor God! This is a great way to know what God wants us to do! Thanks for making the Bible so new!
thanks for opening my eyes to god’s approval in my everyday life. i’m happy to say that God was with me as I picked out my homecoming dress and when I decided to abstain from premarital intercourse. Thanks for helping me to understand my faith and renewing my pledge to God.
Would like to order Revolve Magazine for our daughter Gabriella Marie Irrobali.
Thank you. Please contact us at (???)???-????.
This gives the impression that only girls need the Bible. What about the guys? Don’t they need it to?
I really would like to subscribe to Revolve magazine but I can`t find any information on how to do so. Would someone please send me the information on how to subscribe. I am 12 years old and I feel all kids need this book. Thanks for the help.
Tia
This is a skewed, incomplete, twisted, sacreligious, abomination of God’s Holy Word.
Does revolve have a web address? How do we contact them to help support the magazine. I saw the info on the Today show today!

I would like to order, where, how?
I am wanting to find out how to purchase or get a subscription of Revolve magazine for my daughter.
With the world the way it is and the peer pressure so much worse now, my daughter could only benefit from wjat your magazine offers, I am also interested in purchasing a Revolve bible for my daughter for Christmas.
Thank You for making this avaliable.
You can get Revolve at Amazon, and I’m sure at other bookstores as well. From what I can make out it’s printed as a mazagine but sold like a book; doesn’t look like there’s an issue coming out every month or anything like that. Check it out at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0718003586/qid=1064881310/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/102-0481865-1994544?v=glance&s=books&n=507846#product-details
I can’t believe that people have been blinded by this so-called “bible”. How you can say that teaching girls how to pluck their eyebrows and showing them that it is acceptable to wear midriffs(as shown in Revolve)is not dumbing down God’s Word,is beyond me. I am also a teenage girl who struggles with the pressures of life but I also realize that God was put to death on the cross so I can live outloud for him, not so that I can hide behind this sacreligious junk.
I meet many teenage girls and very few have any interest in reading the Bible, even though they want to follow Christ. I see Revolve as something to get their attention, to draw them in, like an appetizer, that will make them hungry for more nourishing, solid food. I trust the Holy Spirit to dwell in any attempt to draw people closer to Jesus and I believe this contemporary version will reach people who would not have cracked a leather bound book with small print and no illustrations. I’m praying that it will.
revolve looks great. ive just ordered it off amazon for under 10. every teenage girl should get this book, it looks brilliant. if you’re against this book, gurls, but want 2 understand the bible, get some bible study books, i have a 90day reading guide at the moment and its brilliant. keep it real wid da big G yall!!!!!

What is wrong with you people. Your god is dead, get over it.

My God is ALIVE Veruca!! You obviously believe it, because you wouldn’t be reading up on the Revolve magazine if you didn’t! I am praying for you.
Revolve is great for young girls. This magazine version encourages bible reading and it is comprehendible and understandable! I am impressed.
Hey, I’m not trying to be critical, and I haven’t seen the actual thing, but it sounds to me as if this magazine is really making the Bible into something very common and everyday. Well, I agree that teenage girls should read the Word of God, don’t get me wrong, but I really don’t believe it’s right to make the Bible so commonplace. Remember that in the old days, when there was more respect for God’s Word, most people wouldn’t even dream of setting their Bible on the ground. Today we are mixing celebreties’ birthdays and fashion tips on the same pages of God’s sacred letter. Want to know what to do about immodest clothing? Read your Bible- your real Bible. It tells us very clearly that we must, as children of God, dress very modestly, being more concerned with striving for a gentle and quiet spirit than with our clothes and hairstyle. Here’s something else- don’t concern yourself with what guys want in a girl. Focus on God. He has a plan for you, and if it includes getting married, let Him take care of it. Believe me, He can bring you the perfect guy for you- He created him! When it all comes down to the end, I highly doubt you’ll care when some pagan movie star’s birthday is or what kind of junk guys said about girls. Everything you need to know and learn God will reveal to you through His Word and His Holy Spirit. Just forget about the sinning, going-to-Hell-in-a-handbasket world and follow Him.
Kate, 15
Consider this website:

and then consider Revolve again.
Martin,
Thanks for the link. I was thinking about getting this for my teenage daughter. I don’t think I will.
I would like to order the magazine … where can I get a copy… please send info to my email address…
Thanks
I LOVE Revolve magazine. It is soooooooooooooooo inspirational. Me and my friends keep a prayer journal, like the magazine advised us to. It inspires us to talk to God. It taught us that smiling is the best beauty tip. I found it to be so correct. It is so like cool. One time we had a makeover themed sleepover. It was so totally fun. We talked to God and didn’t forget to smile. We found that it helps us understand the Bible. I look foreward to next years issue. I hope that my picture will be in it. I am sooo totally into this magazine.
The Bible has been the best selling book for months. Christians should come together as one and encourage people to read more of Gods word. If this magazine is a way to help young teens turn to God, then why should anyone say anything bad about it? If it helps then let it help. Did the people who are against the Christian magazine ever think to consider that this magazine could possibly bring more people closer to God and make them want to read the Bible? Even if this magazine only brings one person to God then it did what it was set out to do. I personally think that this magazine could help more then what most people realize. Let Gods word be spread to allow those who dont know Christ come closer to Christ. God loves everyone, let everyone see that! In Gods name I do trust.
I am interested in ordering your magazine for my teen daughter and her soon to be teen sister. I heard about it on a news show and am impressed.

is this available in the philippines? or in asia?
i would really like to have a copy of this magazine. thanks!!!
I would like to know where to contact regarding subscription information. I placed and paid for a gift subscription last February. I was informed the magazine would arrive in June/July.The magazine has yet to arrive. I need some follow up on this. Thank You!
I am 16 years old and I have the Revolve Bible. It looks like a magazine but it is the complete New Testament written in more modern words. The meaning hasn’t changed, though. Some people are being very critical of it and I just don’t see why. I took a link here (http://www.av1611.org/kjv/revolve.html) and I found that that review was way off. It was one sided and didn’t mention any of the good points of Revolve, such as how it is the best selling Bible as of late. Teenage girls (and now guys, Refuel is the guys version and we have that one too) who may have never thought of picking up a Bible before are enjoying it and turning to Christ. It is a very positive thing that is happening.
To those who are still critical: read it. Go to a Family Christian bookstore and page through it. See for yourself. It’s not “dumbed down” as some say or “commonplace.” It’s encouraging girls to read the Bible and live better lives for God. Even if you disagree, it’s better than secular teen magazines. C’mon, let’s not divide ourselves over God’s Word. Just check it out before you make up your mind.
If you want, you can order it here:

Veruca,
you need to get a hold of yourself! I have this Bible and it’s awesome! for everyone out there that thinks that this Bible is a sacreligious thing, you are all crazy. I showed it to my friends who were pagans for a long time, and they now come to church! Why? all because it looks like a mag and has tips on how to do your makeup and and everything else. Veruca, I know that my God was dead, but he’s alive in heaven. And best of all, he died so I could get a place in heaven. And Kate, I don’t think that bcoz you have issues or something about makeup or anything else in the mag like the “Guys Speak Out” segment that you should be discouraging other girls to read it. For the first time in my whole life, I have brought five of my girlfriends to Christ and it’s all bcoz of this Bible! So if I was you, I would read the Bible in the first place to see if you like it then I would write my opinions about it.
Remember, God loves us all!
Luv,
Sheila
Hey. I’m 16. and I would LOVE for girls of this modern day world, to fix there eyes on whats true and noble. They dont’ realize what they are doing to guys..AT ALL! I reciently gave a sermon on the “real image” what does that mean to you? One girl said “what u think of yourself, really” and I was like well..yes. But It has to do with ourselves focusing on God, he knows each of us, so well..he made us so perfect and intelectual in his sight. He knows our hearts, if we just focus on him, and worry about our heart and inward beaty, God will take care of the rest. We need to be more mature about this mature. It hurts me how some girs dress so inaproppriate. I guess the only thing we can do is pray. Gather together tonight, in groups of 2 or more, and pray for the girls of this world, today. Because it says “if u gather together in 2 or 3, God dwells with you, and is active” -not exact words. PLease take time to pray for this. Have a wonderful evening, i know i will . God Bless. Love.
I have Revolve as a result of my best friend who had brought it on a trip I went on with my church. It is awesome and I was hooked on it! I just read a website review (those negative ones) and I couldn’t believe what I was reading! It was insane how much they bashed it! Personally, the version that they use is easier for me to understand then the others like NKJV (for me, it is anyway)
This Bible/magazine shows you that you do not NEED a guy to make you happy like all other girl magazines (Cosmo, Seventeen, etc.) present. And it tells you how to keep a great relationship if you have one.
In contrast with what the person who says about “celebs birthdays and Bible” being on the same page, if you notice, it says PRAY FOR THESE PEOPLE OF INFLUENCE. Look, the world is NOT perfect and we need to pray for everyone including, and not limited to, celebs. Wouldn’t you want them praying for us?
So, if you are a mother, wondering whether to get this for your teen or pre-teen daughter, or if you are a teen contemplating whether or not to buy it, I suggest that you do. This version and stlye of a mag made me want to pick up the Bible! Doesn’t it look so much easier and less intimidating then a big ‘ol Bible. Even though it says practically the same thing, and they are both equal in what they represent, I found it much easier to read more with this one.

Return to God you duagters of devil and son of the wicked one
did you hear what i said
you are going to hell with this megazine
i pray that God would destroy you and your children
Wow. To Obie: how harsh is that? I will pray for you. Believe me, though angry as I am, I will still pray for you.
Obie, honey, it will be okay. I really don’t think you should be condemning others because a) you are NOT God, and b) the Bible teaches us not to pass judgment on the salvation of others. This is a really great Bible. It does not skew the meaning of the Word, but translates it into the teenage vernacular. Don’t tell me you can understand every single passage of the King James Version. This is the Bible with a shiny new cover. It teaches girls how to deal with real issues by looking to the Bible. It may not be the Bible for everyone, but it’s still the Bible.
Er…’Beauty Secrets’ !?
I thought pride was a sin.
Hey, my friend and i were wanting to start a bible study and we were wondering if you would like to give us a sample copy or some thing of that sort. Thank you for your time.
Sincerly,
Cristin
I am about to start a Girls of Grace Bible study for the youth girls of my church. I’m trying to find other practical resourses to use as hand outs. Where do I find this magazine. Also, I need information to speak to them on “Does God Really Care What I Wear?”
Thank you and the Lord bless you and keep you.
I haven’t read Revolve. I really don’t know anything about it other than what I’ve read here. However, I think that parents really need to look strongly into what there children are reading, seeing, and getting involved with- including this magazine. On that note- the website from Martin should be completely ignored. Reading it without ever seeing the magazine, it is obvioulsy written in extreme hatered and exaggeration. Again I encourage parents to look at the magazine personally before giving it to their teenage daughters, but definitely don’t judge it by that website.
How do i get Revolve?
