Book publisher: Amazing response to Bible magazine, Revolve
Posted on September 2nd, 2003 by Anthony K. Valley
For those of you who have been following the progress of, “Revolve”, the magazine-style New Testament aimed at teenage girls, CNN has an interview with Kate Etue, senior editor of Transit Books, publisher of “Revolve.”
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Don’t judge the Good Book by its cover. That’s what a Christian publishing house is preaching. Transit Books has taken a cue from the likes of “Vogue” and “Cosmo” and published the magazine “Revolve.” You wouldn’t know it by looking at it, but “Revolve” is actually a glossy version of the New Testament aimed at teenage girls.
If you are wondering if this bible is selling:
BLITZER: Well, it is a pretty interesting concept. How many have you sold so far?ETUE: We have sold about 30,000 in the last month, when the average Bible sells 40,000 a year. We were pretty happy with that, and we’re going back to press already for our second shipment.

In most cases, I believe that homosexual poeple do not really have a choice in their preference. It is something that is *different* within them. By accepting how GOD has created them, their lives are surrounded by those who *accept* them. Being why gay support groups, clubs, organization, events, etc…are created. The gay *life style* is no different and maybe worse than that of a *straight* couple. Sex was supposedly given to us to *reproduce* so, needless to say, straight couples are sinners as well, summed up by what you preach. I love the relationship that I have with God and lead my life trough him. However, I know that *I* was different and realized that God made me this way. The only difference is that *you* make me feel that the closes people to God are extremely hipocritical. If you look trought the history of religion, it is changed and mold by *man*. God is a loving God and loves me regardless as long as I am living the way He wants me to live. I may be gay, but that does not mean, that I am perverted, evil, or even a bad person. I have been this way as long as I can remember. Instead of shunning gay people, you should really just be friends and get to know that they are people and have extremely big hearts as well as any other people. They just are going on with their lives, trying to fight the prejudices that man have cast upon them. Please show love (like I have), that is God’s way.
How can I subscribe to Revolve?
I saw on the news that Revolve Magazine is openly against homosexuality. With the fact that this is a magazine geared towards teens, doesn’t it seem a bit ridiculous to further discrimination on those who are, perhaps, struggling enough already in coming to terms with their sexuality?!?
I think this magazine will be great for teens, this country is in trouble if we don’t repent and have a reverence for God, after all he’s the reason this country exists and is blessed. To stand up against homosexuality is right. We need more true christians to stand up against the immorality that is facing us today from every side. It takes a strong person to not give in to today’s temptations and choose to follow Jesus.
Correction: I meant to say that the *straight* life may be worse than that of the *gay* lifestyle.
One problem our teens have today is that society is afraid to say anything is wrong. That leads to the philosophies we’re seeing today in teens. It’s OK to cheat; it’s OK to steal; it’s OK to have sex even if I know there’s no commitment of marriage; it’s OK to…You name it, it’s OK to do it because “it’s OK for ME. I believe in it!” That whole philosophy leads to the destruction of self and/or others. Homosexuality falls under that umbrella. “Homosexuality is good for me” has destroyed families and it has wrecked lives. I’ve seen it happen to several teenagers during my life. I expect to see it more often in the coming years–mostly because no one tells them that they will be hurt by their actions.
In a nutshell, if you knew someone was going to casually stroll into a building that was on fire, you wouldn’t say, “Oh, well, that’s all right for you if you believe you should.” You would stop him before he destroyed himself. Our philosophy should be the same as we deal with those who are considering the “practice” of homosexuality, no matter what their ages because it destroys more thoroughly than any fire.
RE: Revolve Magazine
Nicole:
I was searching for where I could buy of copy of this magazine and came across inthefaith.com’s website and read your posted message regarding the magazine’s open agreement with the bible against homosexuality. Remember, the magazine, or anyone else, is only repeating what God has already said. It’s the message you have to look at, not the messenger.
Kids are confused because of the bombardment of media exposure (MTV, Reality TV, and other programs) that portrays homosexuality as being acceptable, for whatever reason those find to be acceptable since they do not have faith to believe in God’s word. It’s not the homosexual in which Christians or even God is offended by, it’s the act of homosexuality itself. Man was never created to be with another man sexually, nor were women.
I believe that Revolve magazine is trying to clearly send a message to teenagers regarding the importance of recognizing sex as a loving and committed relationship between a married heterosexual couple. The Old and New Testament clearly depict instances where people went against God and decided to live for themselves, and suffered (Leviticus 20, Romans 1:18-32, 2:8), instead of making the Heavenly Father the most important relationship one could have. It’s really all about having a close, intimate, and personal relationship with God, through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Wouldn’t you agree with me that adultery is wrong (sin)? If so, then so is homosexuality. It’s just as wrong for a husband or wife to commit adultery (sin) as it is for two people of the same sex to engage in sex with each other. Wouldn’t you agree with me also that murder is a sin? If so, then the same applies again. Sin is sin when it goes against what God has created and since Satan is the one who wants to destroy what God has created, then Satan will do all he can to entice, tempt, lure, encourage, God’s creation to go against what God has said not to do. It’s the exact same thing he did to Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden.
I hope this may help you a little more to understand what God wants from you and I, and everyone else in His world.
Live deeply in Christ.
I completely agree with Carolyn and Kurt. It is in the Teen-age years that you form(for the most part) who you will be for the rest of your life. If they are not told what is right and what is wrong they will end in Hell for eternity and personally I do not want to be held accountable for that. So I say good job Revolve, keep getting God’s word out there so what the parents don’t tell their kids can be relayed by other means.
God Bless.
I saw the segment on the NBC today show this morning and couldn’t beleive what I heard. A liberal media source actually giving support to an enterprise to spread the WORD to teenagers that have been denied this opportunity by all other liberal causes. The idea of putting these concepts in a format that today’s youth can understand is out standing. Keep streading the good news and keep parents active in thier children’s lives. How do we get the magazine?
Hi again! Readers, I just want you to know the truth of God’s Word. Revolve goes totally against the Bible, if you ask me. I have read that it advertises midriffs as OK, and that it gives fashion tips and birthdays of movie stars. Sorry, but the Word of God needs nothing to draw people unto the Father! Never, never, never conform to this going-to-Hell-in-a-handbasket world under the guise of “attracting people to Christ.” Whatever! The people who won’t take the Bible for what it is don’t really want to change, anyway, and I can say pretty securely that the person or people who came up with this idea probably have no clue as to what living a pure, seperated life before God even is. God is way powerful enough to bring people to Himself without watering down the awesome life of righteous Christianity. So if you’re out there, wondering if you should subscribe to this magazine, please listen to what the Holy Spirit of God is saying and don’t conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Ok listen to me. This pop-culture Christianity is just total crap. “Who Would Jesus Date”??? Can you break the 3rd commandment a little more please? For Christians to take the Bible and turn it into Teen magazine enfuriates me. How dare you. My Bible tells me not to add any words/ideas/etc. to the words written in the Bible (Rev. 21). People are mocking Christianity for reasons like this. I hope the people coming out with this are happy. Of course now I’ll probably get labeled as some narrow-minded, legalist. If holding to what the ACTUAL Bible says makes me a legalist, then fine, call me one. I am only urging you, as brothers and sisters under Christ, not to take the name of the LORD in vain.
Hey people…i gotta say this quick…Paul says “he would be all things to all people.” I can see where you’re coming from, but you gotta think about it. God wants to reach all his people through his Word and he uses different ways to do so. I have experienced it in my own life and seen it in other’s. I have a friend that reads KJV and loves it and understands it. But i have a hard time getting what they are talking about, and so I use a different translation. You see? It’s like trying to give prunes to a constipated kid. It’s good for them, but they don’t think so. So what does mom do? Spiff it up and make it tasty, and then the kid wants it. And do you think that an unsaved teenager is gonna pick up the bible on their own and read it? I don’t think so. And some of the girls in our youth group aren’t too keen on reading it either so when they saw the Bible they were thinking and saying “cool!” and look at it this way: if you had to get a new bible for some reason, would you go get a revolve bible? No! you’d get something that suited your taste. same visa versa for others, some things suit your taste that don’t suit others. well, i sure have said a lot, but i’ll close with this: have a great day in Him, Chris
Ps. side note: i do believe, strongly, that God uses the Bible to draw unsaved teens to Christ. just as he draws you closer to Him every time you read your bible, he uses other resources to draw others to him.
I saw the revolve bible at the library and signed it out thinking, “Now I really have seen everything!” I was curious to see whether or not it really was as awful as it looked. Three days later, I’m still not sure.
Yes, it is a bit horrifying that the bible is designed like a fashion magazine. But does that mean that it has been ‘dumbed down’ to the level of a fasion mag, or that the publishers have learned that (superficial as it may be) non-Christian teenage girls WILL buy fashion mags on the stands but WON’T just flip through a bible because it looks interesting? Yes, it is an easy and appalling way to sell more bibles but while everyone is so worried about publishers ‘cashing in’, we forget that every Christian’s fantasy is to have bibles sell like crazy.
Having seen many such fashion magazines and several hundred ‘beauty tips’ columns, I have to say that these ones caught my attention. It is always a bit affronting to expect something ordinary and to be caught off guard. As soon as I saw the colourful little ‘beauty tips’ sections, I subconsciously braced myself for instructions on mascara application. The idea of teen beauty advice geared to becoming a more spiritually radiant person is surprising. In a world where many people (especially teens) see Christianity as a tired cliche, it will take a few attention-grabbing stunts to change ideas. As appalling as people seem to think that is, I would like to point out that Jesus himself often tried to ‘catch people off guard’ by giving them new ways of looking at old things including tradition. This does not mean that all attempts to challenge the norm are sanctioned by God, but perhaps it should not be condemned outright. If a teenager cannot come to God with their problems, they will not come to God at all. Young teenage girls are very emotional and insecure and will often blow things out of proportion. If someone is truly distraught over make-up, dating or cool clothes, is it not right for the bible to speak to them as well? If a girl learns that it is alright to pray about such things, she will grow spiritually and have the strength to see beyond to what is more important. If she believes that she must initially ignore all the things that make sense in her world, she will never turn to the bible.
I seem to be unique in believing that the main problem with the Revolve bible is that it uses the NCV translation, which is widely believed to be, at best, a little assuming and at worst, a little skewed. Many people are complaining that the bible has been ‘added to’ by the quizzes and beauty advice. The word of God has not been altered (at least not from the standard NCV
in the Revolve bible to acommodate teen issues. Random teen columns ARE inserted in the margins, etc. My NIV study bible has extensive footnotes, maps and indexes. Does that mean that things have been added? No, while the book itself has been added to, the scriptural text itself has not had anything added or removed. The study notes are clearly shown as being separate from the word of God. So too are the ‘beauty tips’ of the Revolve bible. (Also worth mentioning is the fact that, technically, any effort to define, analyze or expand upon the inspired word of God is heresy. And yet, as imperfect humans, we have no other way of seeking God through the word. )
And a side note, as someone who became a Christian many years ago as a young teenage girl: If you want to spread the good news, the ‘proper way’ to go about it varies from person to person. The only agreed-upon way to do it is to accurately and convincingly convey the salvation available to humanity. This almost NEVER involves direct condemnation. The correct way to bring someone to God is not the way that gives one the warm, fuzzy feeling of righteous indignation. The right way is the way that WORKS. If a person is following the wrong path and has a friend who is calm, loving and who rejoices in the Lord’s grace, they WILL notice. When we see someone like that, we want to know where their strength comes from. It is so easy to condemn someone. It is much more difficult to support them without supporting their path. To tell an unsaved person that God will smite them is to drive someone further away. If you try to stop someone from running into a burning building, they will immediately see the logic and understand that you did them a favor. But if you try to stop someone from doing something that makes them happy, they will not be so grateful, nor so open to what you’re offering.Taking the route of cautious guidance is the hardest, but it is often the only way.
The underlying message of Christianity is that if we only accept Christ as our saviour, God is ready to accept us as we are, regardless of how sinful, adolescent or ditzy we may be. Through the word of God we are THEN transformed by his great plans for us. Teenage girls will always be self-conscious and silly, but they also make some of the most passionate, devoted and radiant Christians. God is ready to accept the teenage girl. Perhaps we should be, too.
Wow. So many of the arguments I’ve read on here today about why homosexuality is wrong and is against God and the teachings of Christ have me strangely reminiscent of exactly what supposedly good Christians were saying about how race mixing was evil. They are the same arguments used by lawmakers up until the ’70s when finally, it was decided that you could actually marry someone of another race legally. The 70′s! It seems unbelievable that the holy Bible was used for those horrible, hate-filled arguments by otherwise good people so recently. But then, even Satan can quote the Bible for his own purposes. A question – considering how homosexuals are probably the single most hated minority in the world – that even minority races who are otherwise hated hate homosexuals – why then would someone actually choose to be a homosexual? If you think it’s a choice or lifestyle, you’re just wrong. The notion of “loving the sinner and hating the sin” is both bigoted and grossly condescending. Additionally, Christ never said a word about homosexuality. The way I see it and the way my pastor explained it to me is that God made each of us and we should all aspire to follow Christ’s teachings. Gay, straight, or stuck somewhere in the middle – we are who God made us.
You all might want to be more compassionate in your sounding off about homosexuality. Despite the fact that there are some homosexuals out there who make homosexuality look terrible, many people with homosexual tendencies are desperately unhappy about it, and others just accept what they feel they cannot change. What if you woke up tomorrow with those tendencies? What if you had a daughter who had those tendencies…what if your sister did, or brother. What if your sister or brother tried to commit suicide when they realized they were gay? What if… what if …what if….
I mean, I don’t think same-sex sex is right. I know it’s against God, and I agree that its best not acted on. But God also says not to have sex before marriage..thats fornication, and many other things…do you go over the speed limit? Do you say a bad word sometimes? Do people have extra-marital affairs? We never treat people as badly as we treat homosexuals. Why? When a pastor has an extramarital affair, society has often brushed it off…but that pastor should have controlled himself and his desires. But for whatever reason (fear? ) when its a homosexual..its worse. Why? Only because its so hard NOT to picture homosexual sex….when we say “homosexual”and it makes us so uncomfortable! Some gay people can’t even help their feeling when they first start…all they know is they have them. Then they are made to feel like misfits or demons………….
Well, i know one thing is certain. Jesus would have dinner with them!!!
Compassion is so important. Jesus was so compassionate! And we are meant to be like Him! I don’t say let go of your principles. Just have compassion. Please please remember this. Have compassion. There are tears running down the face of more than one gay person this very moment. Because they feel so hated…hated for feelings they have that they often don’t understand. The pastor, who knew he shouldn’t have an affair…does..and we often (in society) excuse him…but the gay person is crucified, lynched and never forgiven!
Jesus loves the gay people too.
Please be compassionate. Hatred and intolerance is what makes the world a horrible place. Christians should not be intolerant. We should speak the word of God, we should tell of Jesus to the World. But when some people don’t want to accept it, we should leave them alone. After all, we’ve told them! They are allowed that choice. Jesus gave the young ruler who wouldn’t give up his wealth a choice too. And we can anad should still pray for them. But when we hate and fear and point fingers…thats when we become Crusaders, who kill when people don’t believe what we believe. Thats NEVER what Jesus had in mind. NEVER
And a magazine that reprints the word of God in a way for teens to read it more easily is great..why is everyone being so silly about this. I mean, if they changed the words I could understand, but its the same words on different kind of paper. I’ll bet Jesus is showing it to his Father right now saying, “Look Dad, how cool is this. It helps teens understand the Word (thats ME!)…. How cool is that?”
God Bless you all!
vicki
I want to subscribe to this magazine…but i don’t know how or where to! I feel like I’ve been slippin away from God and I want to boost my self-esteem and energy by focusing on God more! Being a christian around a lot of lost people is hard…I need something more that other teen girls have advice and situations like mine in!
I think fighting stuff like homosexuality and changing the bible is ridiculous, if we are all Christians we should be on each others side, not fighting with each other. If someone chooses to read Revolve, let them, its their choice. I personally don’t see anything wrong with it. But if you choose not to, great, read your bible. It all says the same things and is teaching about God greatness and Jesus’ sacrifice because he loved us sooo much!!
I meant to say *fighting about stuff like*
thanks for that
apply tea or beetroot juice on your lips for beautiful, red lips.try it!
Thank you for this good relationship article. It might just help mine out. Thank you again!
