Bible school ‘Rickshaw’ insensitive, pastor says

The Vacation Bible School curriculum about Japan has raised some concerns with Christians.

bq.. The Rev. Soong-Chan Rah of Massachusetts said he is stunned that a Nashville-based Christian publisher would produce a vacation Bible school curriculum about Japan that he believes is full of offensive stereotypes.

_’‘It was almost comical that in this day and age somebody would use that kind of theme,’’ said Rah, pastor of Cambridge Community Fellowship Church, a multi-ethnic congregation in Massachusetts. ‘’I was just stunned that a Christian publication company would be that insensitive.’’_

The Bible school material, called Far-out Far East Rickshaw Rally-Racing to the Son is produced by Lifeway Christian Resources, the publishing arm of the Nashville-based Southern Baptist Convention, the country’s largest Protestant denomination.

Rah, the Cambridge pastor, said the program was not well researched.

  1. Ethics Daily has an article on this topic at

I wrote to Lifeway as well as my local Baptist leaders but have not received any response. However, I am frankly stunned by Christians who continue to insist that this is not offensive.

  2. I don’t know how offended Asians have to be before they’re willing to create an uproar over this.. already seeing churches promoting this as VBS curriculum for summer 2004.. but, perhaps ironically, haven’t found an Asian Baptist church promoting that they’re using it..
