Preachers will sleep in streets to protest B.C. government’s welfare cuts

As British Columbia redefines the welfare system to shorten eligibility to only two years, Rev. Harold Munn and other clergy will sleep in the streets in protest of the government’s proposition.

bq.. VICTORIA (CP) – An Anglican church minister is vowing to sleep in the streets in protest and an anti-poverty group wants to draw national attention to the B.C. government’s plans to put a two-year time limit on welfare payments.

Rev. Harold Munn of Victoria said he and other clergy from various religious faiths will begin sleeping in the streets in an attempt to force the Liberal government to rescind its April 1 plan to implement the policy.

Under the new policy, one of several changes to welfare in British Columbia, the government will reduce or cut welfare payments to employable people who have been receiving benefits for two of the last five years.

Munn participated in a joint news conference Wednesday that saw members of Victoria’s city council, school board and social service community join forces to protest the government’s plan.
