US Supreme court rules against religion student

US Supreme court sanctioned the state of Washington’s rescinding a student’s scholarship when it was discovered that the student would use the funds to pursue a degree in theology.

bq.. In a departure from its recent trend of allowing religion in state-sponsored settings, the U.S. Supreme Court voted today to allow states to single out students who study theology as being ineligible for taxpayer-funded scholarships.

The 7-2 ruling said the state of Washington did not violate the Constitution when it denied a scholarship to a student studying to be a minister, the Associated Press reported.

_”Training someone to lead a congregation is an essentially religious endeavor,” Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist wrote for the majority. “Indeed, majoring in devotional theology is akin to a religious calling as well as an academic pursuit.”_
