Evangelical leaders uncritically endorsing The Passion of The Christ lose their moral authority

Barry Bowen, the editor of Christian Headlines, posts this editoral about evangelicals endorsing the “The Passion of the Christ” without any criticism of the movie at all.

bq.. After watching the The Passion of The Christ, I left the theater disturbed that so many evangelical pastors and leaders uncritically endorsed this brutal film. Mel Gibson’s film deviates from scripture in several places. According to the movie, Mary Magdalene is the woman brought to Jesus for the crime of adultery. Yet the Bible never states this.

Evangelical leaders will demonstrate a hypocrical double standard in 2005 when The Da Vinci Code, another movie about the life of Christ, is released. Expect the Christian press and pastors, many of them supporters of Mel Gibson’s movie with all its violence, to attack Ron Howard for his film because of its playing loose with the scripture. Few evangelical pastors after seeing the film have criticized the violence and deviations from scripture in The Passion of The Christ.

p. As Christians, we are to “prove all things” and “hold fast to that which is good.”
Church leaders should take an active role in providing biblically sound resources to its congregations as a postlude to viewing this movie.

p(verse). 1 Thessalonians 5:21 But test {and} prove all things [until you can recognize] what is good; [to that] hold fast. (Amplified Bible)

  1. This is an example of the Magdelene anointing. Gibson was delivered from substance abuse, and in return he directed and produced this film as his form of worship for it.

This is his praise and worship for what God did for him.

  2. This is a great homage to the love that Jesus

gave us—why is it everyone has to look for something bad in everythingthis film is filled with the love God had for us and his desire for our eternal salvation——-it was the best film our family has seen this year the crucifiction was inevitable-it was the fact that he gave his life for us——-not who is responsible.
