Study: 4% of Priests Accused of Abuse Since 1950

Staggering numbers concerning reported sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church.

bq.. WASHINGTON About four percent of Roman Catholic clerics have been charged with sexual abuse since 1950, and nearly 11,000 people have claimed since then that they were abused as minors by priests, according to two unprecedented studies commissioned by America’s bishops.

The “smoke of Satan” has been allowed into the Roman Catholic church because the bishops failed to stop pervasive sex abuse, according to one document.

Eighty percent of the alleged victims were male, and just over half said they were between the ages of 11 and 14 when they were assaulted, a source who read the reports told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The abuse claims were filed against 4,392 of the 109,694 clergy who served over the last half-century.
