The Man With The Purpose: Time Magazine on Rick Warren
Rick Warren’s plan for spiritual fulfillment is making him one of America’s most influential ministers
bq.. When Mel Gibson began looking for influential ministers to endorse his controversial film, The Passion of the Christ, high on his list was the Rev. Rick Warren, founding pastor of the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif. (Warren loved the movie, reserved blocks of seats at local cinemas for his parishioners and on two weekends last month delivered sermons on the Passion and plans another one for Easter.) When the White House wanted advice on how to observe the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, aides called Warren to meet with the President, the First Lady and West Wing staff members, many of whom have dog-eared copies of his best-selling book The Purpose-Driven Life.
Movie stars and political leaders aren’t the only ones turning to Warren for spiritual guidance. Over the past 17 months, 15 million copies of The Purpose-Driven Life have been sold. And since it was published in 1995, an additional 1 million copies of The Purpose-Driven Church have been snapped up as well. Meanwhile, nearly 300,000 ministers from 50 states and 120 nations have participated in Warren’s pastor-training seminars and Internet classes, and more than 10,000 churches of various denominations have offered his 40 Days of Purpose group-study course. Beyond the chapel, millions of people from the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour members to Coca-Cola executives to high school students to prison inmates meet regularly to discuss Warren’s belief that the only way to discover who you are and what you’re living for is to divine God’s purpose for you.

You know, I sometimes wish Warren wasn’t such a nice guy. He certainly seems like a guy that is really dedicated to what he is doing and honestly believes that what he is doing is God’s will. I almost feel guilty having such concerns about The Purpose Driven phenomena simply because in so many ways Warren is admirable. It would be much easier to be critical of his writings if he was like Robert Tilton or Jimmy Baker!
MEL GIBSONS MOVIE
“THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST”
Because The Passion of the Christ movie adds a lot of material that is not included in the Bible, it adds mans lies to the crucifixion account. From what I have read about it, the movie is focused on Christs physical death and thereby misses the spiritual point about Christs suffering the equivalent of eternal wrath of God for the sins of His chosen people.
Since Jesus Christ is Eternal God, it is blasphemy to make any kind of an image of Christ in ANY form. Although it does not do much good to cite Scriptures to people who are not saved and who do not place themselves under the authority of Gods Word, these are the words of God to the whole human race:
Exodus 20:4-5 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: {5} Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; (This is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:8-9)
Romans 1:22-25 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, {23} And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. {24} Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: {25} Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Revelation 22:18-19 “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book [the Bible], If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: {19} And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”
The movie places a great emphasis on Christs PHYSICAL punishment and death. However, if given the opportunity, we true believers should be prepared to talk about the SPIRITUAL aspects of the Atonement. We should stress that Christ in His SOUL EXISTENCE endured the equivalent of ETERNITY IN HELL for those who were CHOSEN to be saved from BEFORE the foundation of the world. That is why Christs SOUL (or Spirit) is mentioned in the following verses:
Isaiah 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make HIS SOUL an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
Psalms 16:10 For thou wilt not leave MY SOUL in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
The secular world is concerned about whom to BLAME for Christs death on the cross. However, we need to remember that Christ became man in order to pay for the sins of His people. It was predetermined by the COUNSEL OF THE GODHEAD BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD that Jesus would be made sin, lifted up and become a curse for us. In that sense, we are ALL to blame for Christs death:
2 Corinthians 5:21 FOR HE [GOD THE FATHER] HATH MADE HIM [GOD THE SON] TO BE SIN FOR US, WHO KNEW NO SIN; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
John 3:13-15 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. {14} And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, EVEN SO [IN THIS MANNER] MUST THE SON OF MAN BE LIFTED UP: {15} That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Galatians 3:13 CHRIST HATH REDEEMED US FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW, BEING MADE A CURSE FOR US: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
John 10:17-18 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I LAY DOWN MY LIFE, that I might take it again. {18} NO MAN TAKETH IT FROM ME, BUT I LAY IT DOWN OF MYSELF. I HAVE POWER TO LAY IT DOWN, AND I HAVE POWER TO TAKE IT AGAIN. This commandment have I received of my Father.
Acts 2:22-24 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: {23} HIM, BEING DELIVERED BY THE DETERMINATE COUNSEL AND FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: {24} Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
Philippians 2:5-11 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: {6} Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: {7} But made himself of no reputation, and TOOK UPON HIM THE FORM OF A SERVANT, and was made in the likeness of men: {8} And being found in fashion as a man, HE HUMBLED HIMSELF, AND BECAME OBEDIENT UNTO DEATH, EVEN THE DEATH OF THE CROSS. {9} Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: {10} That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; {11} And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Our responsibility as true believers is to present the TRUTH of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world, and God will do the saving by the power of the Gospel and the working of His Spirit in the hearts of all those for whom Christ died.
Romans 10:17 So then FAITH cometh by hearing, and hearing by the WORD OF GOD.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the GOSPEL OF CHRIST: for it is the POWER of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
John 3:7-8 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. {8} The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is BORN OF THE SPIRIT.
God does not need the blasphemous lies of men to accomplish His salvation program.

Having lived long enough to have experienced times of revival (the Jesus movement of the late ‘60’s, and on..), and stints overseas, all I can say is, go easy on those who have unwittingly or wittingly started a fresh desire for God.
The naysayers (those who are out for blood whenever a fresh resergence of faith comes along, rife with proof-texting) often miss what is happening right now: a revival that may have staying power. Having experienced all the put downs during the last revival, having outlasted the incredible meanness of spirit they engender, I wish those well-versed in scripture, out w a magnifying glass looking for error, would stow it. There will be a time during the after-effects of revival, just about midway, when some really evil ideologue will come along, mascarading as a more “on fire” version of Christianity. Nab that one. Get him before he causes real harm. But leave alone those who are finally getting some long-overdue reaching out to God, finally “getting” the message of the New Testament, wanting repentance and a new life.
Let’s steer clear, this time, of pharasitical (sp) behavior.

IS THE CHURCH DEAD?
Q-1. What kind of question is that? Many people still attend church each week.
A. Yes it is true that there are still many churches with many people in attendance; but a churchs spiritual life is not based upon numbers in attendance, it is based solely upon its faithfulness towards the Bible. God has warned the New Testament congregations that the light of truth will be removed if they do not keep His commandments:
... repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. (Revelation 2:5)
Q-2. I know the church is not perfect, but I dont think it is dead. Why would you say the church is dead?
A. You are correct that the church has never been perfect, and God tolerated the disobedience of the corporate church for quite some time. But the time has come that Gods longsuffering patience with the church is over and His judgment has begun upon the churches:
And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. (Revelation 2:21-22)
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God… (1 Peter 4:17)
Q-3. The great tribulation? Isnt that supposed to be a horrible time of blood letting? Are we in the great tribulation?
A. Yes. However, the character of the great tribulation is not one of physical violence; but the character of the great tribulation is that of spiritual unfaithfulness in the churches and congregations of the world towards the Word of God. The churches of our day (all denominations: whether Catholic or Protestant) have fallen away tremendously from the truths of the Bible:
For then shall be great tribulation such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be… For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. (Matthew 24:21, 24)
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; (2 Thessalonians 2:3)
Q-4. Who is the man of sin? I have heard that he will be a great political ruler.
A. Whenever some particularly evil leader arises people immediately think he is the man of sin or antichrist; but the man of sin spoken of in the Bible is not a man at all, but rather he is Satan himself. Satan alone qualifies since he is the only one who could have been present nearly 2000 years ago; and yet, come against the people of God near the end of the world:
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. (1 John 4:3)
Q-5. Are you saying that Satan is going to come against the church as the man of sin?
A. Yes. The Bible says that once the church age is finished Satan will be loosed to assault the churches and congregations with false gospels near the end of time:
And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, (Revelation 20:7)
And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ariseth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. (Revelation 11:7)
And it was given him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. (Revelation 13:7)
Q-6. All I am hearing from you, is that Satan overcomes, that he is victorious. But where is God in all of this? Where is His Spirit?
A. Things are not out of control. Sadly it is true that Gods Spirit has left the churches; but the Spirit of God is still operating in the world: as a matter of fact, Gods plan is to save a great multitude of people outside of the churches during the great tribulation period:
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. (2 Thessalonians 2:7)
After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude which no man could number… these are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. (Revelation 7:9a, 14b)
Q-7. How is it possible that Gods Spirit has left the church?
A. It is truly shocking for us to hear this; but the Word of God says there is no longer any blessing of God upon those attending churches anywhere in the world. We have to understand this is why the great tribulation is so awful. The Bible declares that Satan is now the one receiving the worship in the churches:
For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the Comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed. (Lamentations 1:16)
And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from before the foundation of the world. (Revelation 13:8)
Q-8. So if I go to church this Sunday who am I worshipping God or Satan?
A. You must find the answer to this question in the Bible:
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) (Matthew 24:15)
... that man of sin… the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. (2 Thessalonians 2:3b-4)
Q-9. If Satan is ruling in the churches today how does this affect my friends and family that still go to church each week?
A. The fact is this: Since Gods wrath is upon the churches of our day, anyone associated with the church is in an extremely dangerous spiritual situation:
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the Words of the LORD. (Amos 8:11)
And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them away. (Jeremiah 7:33)
Parents who desire the best for their children must also consider the awful language of the Bible regarding children being brought up in the churches during the dark days of the great tribulation period:
Woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! (Matthew 24:19)
The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them. (Lamentations 4:4)
Q-10. What should I do then?
A. God instructs His people on what to do once Satan overcomes the churches:
Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. For these be the days of vengance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. (Luke 21:21-22)
And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. (Genesis 19:17)
Q-11. I am not sure I understand what fleeing to the mountains means.
A. In other words, fleeing Judea for the mountains is language that God uses to signify coming out of the churches and congregations that have been overcome by Satan; and entering into Gods care and protection outside of the organized church.
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about His people from henceforth even for ever. (Psalm 125:2)
Q-12. Leave the church? That sounds drastic.
A. There really is no other option: God is not suggesting this as a possible recourse, but He is commanding His people for their own good to come out of the churches:
And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, come out of her My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. (Revelation 18:4)
Q-13. But what about fellowship? Doesnt the Bible say something about gathering together in churches till Christ returns?
A. The Bible tells us not to forsake gathering ourselves together; but it does not tell us that we must gather in churches. Believers can experience wonderful fellowship outside of the churches by meeting in homes or through the electronic medium of radio or Internet:
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. (Hebrews 10:25)
Q-14. Why is this the first time I have heard this?
A. God has concealed these truths in the Scriptures until our generation: The Bible says that God closed up the Scriptures relating to end time events until the actual time of the end arrives:
But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. (Daniel 12:4)
Q-15. Do you think we are near the end of the world?
A. Yes. The Bible says that the judgment now upon the church will transition shortly into the final day of judgment for all (unsaved) mankind:
For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by My Name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts. (Jeremiah 25:29)
Thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel. (Amos 4:12)
Q-16. What will happen once man meets God?
A. Any person who stands before the judgment seat of Christ will be found guilty of breaking Gods law and will be cast into Hell eternally:
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works… And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:12, 15)
Q-17. I havent heard much taught about Hell from the churches I have attended. Do you think God will really throw people into hell forever?
A. Sadly, the churches are not bringing the whole counsel of God in our day. There is much talk about being saved but very little talk regarding what we are saved from. Indeed the Bible does teach that Hell is eternal.
And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where the worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. (Mark 9:43-44)
Q-18. I thought since I went to church regularly that I was safe from hell; but now I am not so sure.
A. The church has never been able to save anyone. Jesus indicated many churchgoers would end up in hell:
Not every one that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity. (Matthew 7:21, 23)
Q-19. How can I escape eternal damnation?
A. This is really the all important question for each one of us because we are all sinners and have offended God and therefore are subject to spend an eternity in hell. But the Bible does speak of the possibility of salvation:
behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. (2 Corinthians 6:2b)
Q-20. So I have to accept Christ? And then will I be saved?
A. Unfortunately, many churches teach this but the Bible says that no man can accept Christ because all men are spiritually dead:
And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; (Ephesians 2:1)
Q-21. Are you sure? I thought all I had to do was accept Christ, isnt this true?
A. No. The problem is that the Bible declares that man is spiritually dead in sin and totally incapable of mustering up faith in himself to salvation.
And there is none that calleth upon thy Name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee… (Isaiah 64:7a)
There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. (Romans 3:11)
No man can come to Me, except the Father which hath sent Me draw him: (John 6:44)
Q-22. I am subject to hell but I cant believe and become saved it seems hopeless.
A. God has written the Bible in order to bring us to a knowledge of our wretched condition; and also to show us that salvation is absolutely not within mans ability to achieve. God Himself must do all the work in the matter of saving the sinner:
When His disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, who then can be saved? But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, with men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:25-26)
For He saith unto Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. (Romans 9:15)
Q-23. Will crying for mercy save me?
A. No. Crying out for mercy is no guarantee that God will save you. There is no formula for salvation. But crying to God for mercy is something God allows us to do. We have to remember we are the rebels. We are the ones in the spiritual dungeon of sin and as we are permitted to cry to the glorious King of heaven it is quite a privilege:
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, thou son of David, have mercy upon me. (Mark 10:47-48)
But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from His fierce anger, that we perish not? (Jonah 3:8-9)
Q-24. I feel very uneasy because salvation seems out of my reach now.
A. Perhaps the reason you feel this way is because the Bible does declare that salvation is not in mans hands. But salvation is of the Lord. This is where trusting and waiting upon God comes in. We approach God very humbly for His salvation; and then we wait for Him to answer. Always remembering that God is a very merciful God:
Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:13)
Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from Him cometh my salvation. (Psalm 62:1)
... He retaineth not His anger forever, because He delighteth in mercy. (Micah 7:18b)
Q-25. How long do I wait for God to save me?
A. We cannot set any time limit, God will save an individual (if it is His good pleasure to do so) in His own time:
I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in His Word do I hope. (Psalm 130:5)
It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. (Lamentations 3:26)
If we have an intense desire for God to save us, then we will be reading the Bible as much as possible. If God saves anyone, it will always be through His Word:
My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy Word. (Psalm 119:25)
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. (Romans 10:17)

IS THE CHURCH DEAD?
What kind of question is that? Many people still attend church each week.
It’s not going to get any better in the long run. Just read Revelation and Daniel if you don’t believe. What is happening in USA churchs is consistant with what you would expect in an affluent world that thinks it has most of the answers, and no longer really needs God. As a church we need to stay faithful to the Holy Spirit and to scripture even though it doesn’t help us grow. Growth is the current fashion of so many of our evangelical churches today, but preoccupation with growth it is false religion. God calls on us the be faithful and Christ like, not to be big and powerful as churches. In many ways Rick Warren and people of his ilk are a false prophets, (although I do not think Mr. Warren ever intended to be). His methods steer us away from the person of Christ in favor of a more attainable human standard of Christian excellence. Faith is placed in the methods rather than in the message as it should be.
Testimony:
She shall bring forth a son, and thou shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21
I was visiting my specialist for internal diseases in the hospital December 24th (every quarter of the year). Praise God, my specialist researcher, he told me that what he can see in the result of my blood test that I am physical not bad. I told him that I remember that he have told me some years before I started with the medication that I will have three more years to my life when I start with the medication. Today I ask the doctor, how long I am on medication now, he told me two years. So than I have one more year to go, serving God. He told me, for what he know that I have without complications many more year to go. I told him that I am very happy to know that I have more years to go, certain to Judgment Day in the year 2011 and I thank God for this gift. I told him that I am on my way to Panama with the True Gospel of Salvation, the tract: DOES GOD LOVE YOU? In Spanish from FAMILY RADIO, he show his interest and told me that he like to see me back after six months.
That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. Luke 1:74-75
All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee. They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power; To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom. Psalm 145:10-12
I will go in the might of the Lord Jehovah,
