Religious Leaders Support Banning Torture

A U.S. Senate measure that would ban torture of war prisoners has the support of Utah religious leaders.


The 41 leaders represent a number of Christian denominations and the Muslim community. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says it has not taken a position on any actions, but condemns inhumane treatment of any person.

The Utah group issused a statement urging their members to press their representatives to pass the 2006 Defense Appropriations Bill that includes anti-torture provisions.

The President has threatened a veto, saying the measure could tie the government’s hands in the fight against terrorism.
