Gospel Artist Tonex Retires from the Music Industry
According to his weblog, Tonex has retired from the gospel music industry as an artist. Tonex sites that he has endure hard mistreatment from the body of Christ and more shockingly, other industry insiders most of all.
Tonex is not abandoning the Christian faith or seeking to start a career in mainstream music. In a recent radio interview with KJLH in Los Angeles, Tonex affirmed his first priority is his commitment to the pastorate. On this radio interview, he speak candidly about his recent appointment to the pastorate following his father’s death, his recent divorce from his wife of four years, and his disdain with the gospel music industry.

After long contemplation and much financial & emotional hardship I have decided that Tonex needs go on hiatus from the music industry. I have tried very hard to endure all that I can from being misunderstodd to being down right lied on and I don’t physically or emotionally have the capacity to continue on anymore under the current circumstances. My record Label ZLG (Zomba Label Group) has repeatedly ignored my requests for help and they just don’t get me as an artist. But I’m not blaming them, it’s hard for anyone to really get me as an artist because I am not the normal type of artist. I bow out. And I don’t know when I’m coming back.
Honestly I don’t feel that I fit into anyone’s catergory but my own, but in a world that’s filled with labels, sections & catergories people can’t function if they can’t put you in a certain box.
I don’t fit totally into Gospel because I don’t sing JESUS JESUS JESUS all day and I don’t fit into mainstream because I don’t sing SEX SEX SEX all day either. I’m at a serious crossroads right now in life. And I don’t have the answers. I cried and cried and cried last night to God for help because I can’t go any further.I’m not writing this so that people can feel sorry, I’m blogging my thoughts out. And I think I need to just bow out gracefully while I’m still on a fairly successful run off of OTB. I will continue to sell my projects online and things like that via YOTONEX but I think I need to just dissappear until I can find a place where I can live at least comfortably. Right now I am an 8 time Stellar Award winning , 2 time Dove award winning, Grammy nominated, Gold Selling artist with no furniture, Divorced, No chairs, No money. The label doesn’t give me advances because my contract a is real wack. And they don’t communicate.I don’t know what else to say world.
What’s funny is I still have people writing to me kicking me while I’m down. So now I say y’all can have it. Tonex will be out of your way once and for all. You win. Please congratulate Ex-Ministries, some Chick from England named Alexandria and a host of other so called Christians who have literally destroyed,defamated , embarrased and fatigue my life, my family and my spirit. I’m done y’all. Really. Sorry that I let some of you down but it wasn’t intentional. I don’t have ANY options right now so I have to do what I have to do which is “Nothing”.
They don’t even ask me what the real deal is but they use and twist my words for controversy sake to sell CD’s DVD’s and magazines. I had no idea Christians get down like this ????

Iam 45 yrs old, a singer gifted from the lord. Yes people today are mean,christians, preachers, family members etc. No one is exempt. When you are truly blessed by God satan will attack you any kind of way he can. I always wanted to be a world known singer any kind. The music world is such a media ground for evil doer that i gave up too on seeking my dream to be a singer. However, i sing everyday, all day to myself and to the Lord. I am even cruicifed for that, I am told Iam selfish. I can not please the world but i can sing, praise, & shout to and with the Lord forever. I Know that the Lord loves unconditonally. Therefore, I focus all of my attention on him and not the people or things of this world, for they all shall pass, but the Lord will be with me forever. I do not care if you abandund the music industries, Please do not abandund the Lord. His promises are forever, forgive your ememies.and pray for them. There is nothing wrong with you, the Lord has blessed you with an insight that most normal people are not able to comprehend therefore they do not understand, but they did not understand Jesus either. I would like to respond to tonex. I relate to all you said about not fitting as a gospel artist, but not exactly as a secular artist either. I’m a young female rapper/singer I do what I do for the glory of God so lives will be transformed. I was extremly excited to see someone young representing for jesus with your album out of the box and your preformances. I don’t care what they do or say tonex your a neccessity to the body of christ . The youth needs you God is doing a new thing and he has raised you up for such a time as this. I would like to say this past summer you touched me when you kept winning those awards on the bet award show. You had such a powerful message that pertained to my life . I knew that word was from God, and also a right now word. Your a highly annointed young man of God, please continue your ministry and all God has raised you up to do . It grieved my wife and I to hear the test
portion of your testimony. I just wanted to encourage and remind you that all things work together for your good. Even those extremely difficult situations that we don’t understand. You would not be under such an attack if you were not a threat to the enemy’s kingdom. Remember that through much tribulation will we enter the kingdom of God and many are the afflictions of the righteous but the lord will deliver us out of them all. My wife Lakithia Jones is also a recording artist who doesn’t fit gospel or secular so I understand that. I want to also remind you that that it was church people that killed Jesus. Yes the religous chief priests, scribes and pharisees. We are not of the world but beware of the same spirit that crucified our saviour. They thought they were doing God’s work by atempting to kill the new thing He was doing. Little did they know that three days later he would rise again. He rose with all power in his hands. I will like to say to Minster Tonex. Please Look to our fathers of faith in the Word of God. MOses did not give up neither did Jesus give up, because if Jesus gave up before he went to the cross where would we be. I am praying for you. What you do not know is about 2 yrs ago God sent a sister in the Lord and I to be your Armour Bearers in prayer when you came to St. Louis. I felt honored when He revealed it to Us. You are a man of God. You must shake off self pity and doubt and repent and get up and do God’s work. We know it is not easy, but you must go on and do it. Not many Gospel artist are actually preaching the true Word of God, Acts 2:38. Please repent and continue because you can reach people that not everyone can. I understand what it means to be different and artsy. Minister Tonex don’t turn away from God or the people that need your help to guide them to the Lord. I just want you to know that there are people who are praying for you. Just because all you see is the negative response’s to your music, doen’t mean the MILLIONs of others are not being blessed. As an artist, unfortunatley, most of the seeds that we plant wont be revealled to us untill we get to heaven. Read the book of Daniel. It is the enemy’s job to wear out the people of God He want’s to sift you as wheat. (And he will use who ever is available for him at the time). I do feel for you but at the same time, Jesus never said that it would be easy for us. God has a plan though, He always does. He knew that this day would come for you, and he knows the out come even of this. Just what ever you do, don’t be bitter at those who accuse you and talk about you and lie on you and hurt you ect……… Bitterness will block your blessing. I was so privaleged to experience your preaching ministy at the Soul Brother’s teen summit @ Abundant Life Family Worship Center in New Brunswick NJ, and I must say that you really blessed me. Both as a gospel artist and as a youth leader, and you even put me in my place as a christian. I needed that and if you did not obey God, It would have taken me longer to get myself in line. But that’s not your reward. Your reward is in heaven. I love you and your ministry and my prayer is not that you continue to sing (because when God starts some thing He finishes it and when it is finished it is GOOD ) so that’s not my prayer. My prayer is that the Lords will be done in you and for you. Your best is yet to come . ………… Oh and by the way. I have had to go out and sing, and come home to no running water in my house, I have had to minister right after finding out that my husband was cheating on me and may be having a child with some one else. I have had to go and minister and come back not to my home but a hotel room with me and my five children because my house caught on fire.And the list goes on and on. None of this is to take away from your pain but just know that you’re not alone in this thig we call ministry And we know that all things do work together for good to those that love God and to those who are the called according to his purpose Love you man. When I first saw Tonex I really didn’t know what to think. When I saw and heard OTB I was blown away. And eventhough I didn’t understand quite where he was coming from and yes is was too far out there for me to grasp, yet I had and have no doubt that his love for the Lord is large and overwhelming. I’ve people talk just as they talked about Kirk Franklin and still do. But they just don’t get it. They just don’t feel it. The love that Tonex has for God is bubbling over inside of him. He lets it out in ways that may make you step back but how can you not feel his love for Christ? He puts his love for Christ to a music back drop that you would never imagine but that lets me know that he has Christ on his mind all the time. How dare someone judge him? Who do you think you are? How dare someone steal from him? How dare you question his love for the Kingdom? Tonex, Kirk, Tye, Erika and Tina Campbell (Mary, Mary), Tye Tribbet etc they have given a flavor to gospel music that has drawn in so many young people. Tonex don’t give in and don’t give up. Look at it as a time to fast and pray away the dirt and grim of the industry and build up strength for the fight. The spirits of this world don’t want you to progress because the Angels rejoice each time a sinner listens because they surrender to God. The Angels rejoice because a backslidder said I’m going back. The Angels rejoice because a Christians says God is everywhere. You fast my brother and you pray. God will bring you out. Oh yeah your latter will be greater than you past. You have too much music in you to bottle it up. You will conquer this mountain because you are more than a conqueror. You are a soldier and the valley may be low but sometimes we have to get dirty to bust through and climb over the mountain. The Holy Spirit will comfort you. Jesus will guide you. God hears and has receives you. Divorce is hard especially for someone full of so much love. I’ve been there. I don’t celebrate the pain that Tonex is experiencing in his life. I pray that he gets up, dust himself off, and start over as he rise up with the spirit of God leading him. This man must serve God and use the gift given to him. He was meant to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ through music. Tonex must seek God’s face for himself and understand God’s view in delivering the message in music. Until he accepts this, we must continue to pray for this man.

Artists such as Tonex must be careful of what tone they set in the music for this is ushered in during praise & worship in the Body of Christ. Music considered worldly can not cross over into praise & worship. Tonex must understand that by doing this it causes much harm in the Body of Christ. There is a line between the world and holiness and they must not merge. Sinners must recognize that they become saints only when they cross over from the world and into the Body of Christ. Without a line or scale, without a difference between gospel and worldly music, there is no measurement and the people are confused of what is of God and what is of satan. I love Tonex and I want him to be successful in his career and personal life. For sure right now you have heard it all. I just wanted to give you a word of encouragement, though you have many which shows you how much you are loved. God loves you with an everlasting love. You are the apple of His eye. Though you may be going through right now, remember, Joy comes in the morning! I cannot fathom what you may be experiencing with the system, and the church. Though I know how insensiitive folks can be. Though this is a hard pill to swallow, especially christian folk. Remember this also, that everyone who say with their mouth that they are a christian are not. Final thought is keep the faith. No matter what, who, what, where, when or why. Stay strong! Though it is hard, and you are being tried, big time, look to the hills from where cometh your help! God Loves you and so do I. May the peace of Christ which passeth ALL understanding be yours through Christ Jesus. Fight the good fight!. Pick up your spiritual sword, put on your armor (Eph. 6) and stand strong in the power of His might.

We’ve been blessed listening and watching your dvd “Out of the Box.” Tonex you named it write and that’s you….Out the Box. Because there’s a great calling on your life. The enemy is angry and wants you to give up hope. Want to let you know that you’re in my thoughts and prayers. Praise God you haven’t lost the faith. Cause w/ God….all things are possible. Is Tonex leaving because of the statement that G Craige lewis of Ex ministries said about Him? For those of you who don’t know he (lewis) said that Tonex said the word Mansturbation in one of his songs (he even played it). I say Tonex if you didn’t say it just prove lewis to be wrong. Ministry is not something you pick up and put down as YOU please. What God called you, you came, you change you mind because you didn’t like the heat? Stop acting like a baby christian, sobing and weeping cause somebody said something about you. They talked about JESUS! I pray that you get over your hurts, because even if you leave the music industry, you can’t minister to anybody about hurts when you can deal with yours.

Dear Tonex,
It troubled me to hear the problems that you have experienced from those that are imposters of the Body of Christ. I say that they are imposters, because true followers of Christ walk in gentalness and love towards one another. It is sad to say, but not everyone that professes to be a part of the Body are not a part of the Body, but they are only for themselves and they speak out of ignorance, anger, bitterness and the list goes on. I pray that God heals the broken heart of yours and I want you to know that I love you. Even though I don’t know you personally, I love you, not because of your gift, but because of your willingness to serve Go. Know that you have a gift that is needed in the Body of Christ and that the enemy would love to shut your mouth, because of the power that procedes out of it. But you already know that this is a spiritual battle and not a battle between flesh and blood. Well I must go, and know that you have a lot of people supporting you in prayer and with our love. Most of all God is on your side with his angles surounding you. If God be for you, he is more than the world against you.

i will keep you in my prayers. it is difficult when God puts you through a big test of faith. i know i am dealing with it now myself. since 2005 up until now marh 2006 my life has been hell (sorry but it has been). but one thing i can’t deny God’s perfectness. meaning he puts us(the ones he chases even when you don’t want to be chased) through something we feel or think we can’t get through but we will get through it. but tonex i must say you may think you will never sing again or be in the industry i have this to say (but after this you are coming out as pure GOLD) please believe that. God is taking you down to the least common denominator and he wants to know will you still love and trust him even when all has been taking from you even your dignity. i will again keep you in my prayers.

I just want to say I love you and I have seen the Lord work through you. At Teach me How to Love You 2005 you ministered to the point that words can hardly describe. The anointing was on you so heavily and people was slain in the spirit, I mean young people as well as old. I believe in you Tonex. I am praying for you. You looked in the camera that night and stated “We dont need anymore artists, we need ministers” I have seen the Lord use you and felt his presence all around you. I have your back my brother and I am praying for a speedy spiritual recovery, because I know, that I know, that I know, that God is not through with you my brother. Be Encouraged, their are people who really do love you. NO MATTER WHAT! I am one of them and I am pleading to God on your behalf. Because the world aint seen nothing yet when it comes down to you. Praise the Lord, I was shock to hear that a powerful man of God as yourself had stop doing what the Lord called you to do. I remember looking at the 2005 stellar awards and i heard you say that you wasn’t there to accept the award,but to prophecy to the person watching that after you have suffered a while he’ll establish you. I felt the presence of God as you were speaking, Because my character at the time wasn’t upholding the standards of God. Right now you’re suffering but no weapon formed against you shall propser it may form but won’t propser. Tonex I believe that the devil will attact our holy ghost fill saints because he know that we have power, he won’t bother some one he already got. Tonex I have to write to you again and let you know that there is a gift inside of you which has been deposited there by the most high God! People should not make you quit the ministry. you cant stop anyone from saying what they want to say because you dont have the power to, but you can decide to close your ears to what they say and do what is required of you as long as it is right in the sight of God. its the high time you did what you were called to do. God has placed that gift in you for the sake of another person. you never know how many lives you change through your music. make up your mind and come back to the viyeard of God and continue with your portion from where you left and may God use you more to reach the world with the gospel through your music.

Geez. I am saddned, disappointed, but not surprised. Tonex has always been in a class all by himself. Tonex must know that pioneers always have to walk the long, hard, rugged road. But he is…a pioneer…just as T. Dorsey was. I am praying for him and know that he will rise again.

Please be encouraged and know that, “Revenge to the enemy belongs to the Lord.” It is His battle and not yours. We know Isaiah 54:31 where it says that no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper. We get happy about the verse, but read the next part and remember that Christ loves you so much that it goes on to say that even EVERY TONGUE that should rise against you in judgement, He shall CONDEM and THE LORD SAID IT. Some of these same people with their mouth on you, shall be ashamed once God is through pruning and purging you. Bless those who Curse you and pray for those who despitefully use you because your reward is great in Heaven and they will need every single prayer that you pray, you pray and watch God move.
Wow I am shocked to hear of such a talented young man leaving the music industry, but such is life. It is a shame that divorce is so prevelant in the Christian community but this is our reality. I don’t know what God’s plans are for Tonex (except what Jeremiah 29:11 says), but despite the disappointments, the hurt and pains he’s been through, be encouraged and do what pleases God. If it is so difficult to live and behave in our everyday living, breathing, doing, life then maybe retiring is the best thing to do. If you ever see this Mr. Tonex, just do what you know pleases God. It’s all about Him anyway. Let Him heal you, restore you and love on you, so you can live your life doing His will. Although I am quite a bit older than your typical fan base, I do enjoy your music, ( I personally own the first three) and I do appreciate you allowing the Lord to use you for that season. living by faith- They have no any financial help from
any organization. We are all doing the Lords work
independently, we had no any support from anybody, all
my co-workers are facing many troubles to maintain
their families due to lack of financial help.
Sometimes they are all in fasting due to lack of food.
Even though they are doing the Lords work without fail
because we have many burdens about the Gospel. Here
all the village people are very poor and they cannot
give anything to Gospel workers because may are all
very poor and they are all daily laborers. I request

co-operation to us to do our Lords work with much

Friend, I am running a children home with 30 orphans
all the children are below 15 years. All these 30
orphan children are in my care. I am maintaining this
children Home with the help of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I had no sufficient regular help from anybody for this
Orphans Home. I am feeding this Orphans Home by
faith.There are 30 Orphans and they are studying well
and they are growing well in our Lords care.

Today is the first time reading about you retiring, I am writing this little note from a deep, deep sadness. I wept today, because I have come to love you so much and bless God for your life for the special gift that He has deposited in you. It is very sad to read such words from you, and I find it had to believe; but I really understand where you coming from. Let’s all consider the story of the good Samarithan. The priest passed by, likewise the Levi- but none showed any compassion. The christian walk is helping your brother when they are weak, but more ofter than not we rather leave them half dead. Tonex ! you have touched many , and all that I have to say is- please do not give up and be strong, I wish I could have the chance to meet you. The storm will be over soon, it’s just a test; and know your later will surly be greater than your former. Man has failed us, but Jesus never fails.

My brother, thank you for your honesty!! I am a big fan of you and I was a few years ago at your concert in Amsterdam, and I was very blessed. I myself has been dissapointed by christians. I never knew some people are able to be so hyppocrite and call themselves christians. When I was about to lose my mind and my life there were no christians who wanted to be there for me. I had a few traumatic experiences and I called for help. No response. God used the world to bring me out. If not for them I would be possibly dead by now. But Praise God I lost everything and the bible says give thanks in every circumstance, not so easy. But I did. He brought me out!!! I am sharing this only to let you and everybody else know God is closer with you than you know. People will let you down Jesus will hold you in His arms and will carry you through everything. I encourage you to do what you need to do. Take the time you need and learn from every experience. My lesson ive learned is that I am not going to be like they treated me. I would just like to encourage you, let you know that God has not Forgot. THat Seasons come and Go. We all need some HELP! Until we as people in the Body make it in, we cannot judge,ridicule, or slander anyone. I want you to know that your music has really touched my life in a way that words can’t tell. The ballads on your CD put me in a peaceful state of mind and Spirit. You have the voice of an angel. Let no one discourage you. I know all too well how fake people can be in the Body. Tonex, my brother and friend, on your O2 album, just about everything you sang about, you are living it right now. The main thing to remember is that someone, somewhere is being encouraged to hang in. To hold on. To surrender their all to God. All because of the anointed soundwaves your lips emit. Don’t let the devil close your voicebox. Forget them triggas and get back to what God has ordained you to do. You are ordained to sing. I be like–God, Tonex don’t even have to try, it just belts out like nothing! No strain, just a beautiful anointed voice. People wish they could sing like you, but they can’t. Most people probably hating anyway. I don’t mean to sound ghetto, but people, especially saints need to learn to pray for people instead of running off at the mouth! Just remember that your audience is God and He is responsible for giving you a voice so unique that it stands out from the rest. If only I could sing with a beautiful voice, I would sing until people desire to be saved and filled with the Holy Ghost. But my gift is not like yours, I will use the gift that God gave me to the best of my ability.
Man will squeeze every ounce out of you until he can’t prosper from you no more. But God will pour love and hope in you until He becomes first and everything else in the world becomes secondary.

I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN…
I am amazed how people who call themselves by the name of Christ, can act NOTHING like him! This has been a constant for more years than I can count. We can be treated like dirt in churches by people who don’t even know us, and it’s not just one or two churches either. Christian doesn’t even seem to mean anything anymore. Some of the people I know have started to refer to true Christians as “Followers of Christ” instead, so as not to be confused with that pool of people who mean nothing by it, or the cross they wear on their neck. SO MANY SPENDS MORE TIME BEATING UP THE BODY OF CHRIST IS IT ANY WONDER WHY SO MANY LEAVE. I REMEMBER RUNNING OUT OF A CHURCH IN TEARS MORE THAN ONCE… HAVING BEEN RAKED OVER THE COLES BY SOME RELIGOUSE PERSON OR ANOTHER! IT’S A WONDER AS MANY OF US HAVE SURVIVED AS WE HAVE.
I truly was stunded by your music the first time I ever saw a video (still the only one I’ve ever seen.) 1st of all – I first thought the church looked like Dr. Creflo Dollar’s church, then realized it wasn’t, but the music & the words were wonderful, and I’m not in your normal age group either. (AND WHITE-BUT I REALLY HATE RACISM-I BUY MY CHILDREN MULTI CULTURAL EVERYTHING-BUT CHRISTIAN MUSIC IS ALL THERE ALLOWED TO HAVE. If your ex-wife didn’t have what it takes to stand along side you in your ministy…God knows someone who will! A wife is a help meet. It’s no wonder you have grow weary in your battle you lost your soport system. THE FAMILY IS A STRONG FOUDATION…THAT’S WHY THE DEVIL IS ALWAYS TRING TO DISTROY IT!
My husband and I have had our own 10 YEAR battle with lack…but on the days when I stuggeled he was filled with hope, and vise versa (ONCE IN A WHILE WE ARE BOTH DOWN, BUT IT’S MORE OFTEN THAT WE ARE BOTH UP). We lost everyone else, for veriouse reasons…but we still had GOD and each other. We are still in the midst of feeling like we are being pushed off a cliff with no was to stop, but we turn on the word, in variouse forms, to try and out weigh the hopelessness. It’s times like this when we can just think…”GOD you didn’t bring us this far to abondon us now”. We are in survival mode, just tring to get through one minute at a time…but each day…a song OR sermon, or word from a strange comes…today I went to run an erran and was so overwhelmed by my problems I almost missed an opportunity to show GOD’s love by helping a neighbor (strangers to me). But God knew If I would continue to do what I knew to do He could do what I couldn’t…so I wait to see just how he will turn all this around for HIS GLORY &AND (AS PROPISED) OUR BENIFIT! (IN THAT ORDER) AND DON”T forget what I said about GOD sending someone to stand beside you in your ministry…the devil has to restore 7 times all that he has stollen…that doesn’t mean 7 wifes-but how about one that is 7 times MORE THE WOMAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART to stand beside you. I married a wonderful man of God with an awesome call on his life, but the call that I have on mine messes with the call of God on his…NOW THAT’S GOD! “The Road to Success is filled with wives pushing their husbands along.” That may sound odd for a Christian(or “Follower of Christ” to say, but my husband said he couldn’t do what God called him to do, I said…that’s what moses said, and he did it. I spent the next two months putting scriptures in his lunch, his truck, on the mirror, on the fridge…everywhere & anywhere I could think of, and I PRAYED, and I’m not a nagging wife (I believe that’s a devilish act), but I encouraged him until he finally realized He could do what God called him to do, and WHEN YOU GO ON IN YOUR MINISTRY… YOU WILL BE MORE POWERFUL THAN EVER BEFORE.

I went with my kids who were really excited to hear Tonex was coming to CLC church in london, only to show up at the church and hear that he could’nt make it, we were really disappointed as we love Tonex music and wanted to see him live.
Tonex just hang in there, god’s plans for your life still stands,do not give up.Go deeper with Jesus and hold onto him as he hold onto you, christ in you the hope of glory. may be where god wants to take you means that you had to shake off everything that’s not made of gold, yes you’re going through the fire but if you let god take you through and heal your broken heart when you come out the other side you will not even smell of smoke.
