Sudan braces for unrest as ICC decision looms

Sudan (MNN) — The International Criminal Court says it will announce on March 4 its decision whether to issue a warrant for President Omar al-Bashir. He’s accused of masterminding the Darfur genocide that’s killed thousands. President of Kids Alive International Al Lackey is in Sudan where they operate three children’s homes. He says all relief groups are preparing for the worst. And Kids Alive is no exception. “Out staff is going out to buy extra food, much like you would if there were a weather crisis coming, so we’re trying to prepare. Our western staff will be out of here by Saturday.” While they’re watching carefully, Kids Alive continues plans to build two more homes because thousands of kids are orphaned. “Everybody needs a foundation of a family or a home. We give them the education and the stability, the love and the care, but we also want to meet their spiritual needs so they have the same eternal hope we all have as believers in Jesus Christ.” Donations are needed. Uneasy calm hangs over Nigeria.

Nigeria (MNN) — Next, an uneasy calm hangs over the Nigerian city of Bauchi, mainly because the area remains under a dusk-to-dawn curfew. Deadly riots erupted Saturday that left thousands displaced, 14 dead and 100 in the hospital. International Christian Concern and Open Doors say there is still concern that sectarian riots could rival the massacres in Jos. It appears Muslim extremists were targeting Christians, and that has caused ministry in the region to slow. Pray boldness and wisdom for the Christians.

Cuban government remains unfriendly toward Christians

Cuba (MNN) — World Serve Ministries has thought of creative ways to spread the Gospel in Cuba. World Serve’s Ken Leggatt says, “We’re looking at doing several conference centers, or training centers, throughout the island–up to four in fact–where we will be able to conduct leadership and mentorship programs, discipleship programs, and even some youth camps. So we’re working towards strategizing with the church there and how we can best come alongside them and assist them and support what they’re already doing, but to do it even more effectively.” Cuba’s government does not look kindly on Christian activity, so it might be hard to get building permits to get the centers started. Funding will also be an issue. “Even bags of concrete are horrendously expensive. I believe the cost was $20 CUC which is about $20 USD for a bag of concrete. It’s prohibitive to build just due to funds.” To learn more about how you can help in Cuba, visit our Web site.

Summit announced for mobilizing believers on behalf of the orphans

USA (MNN) — We turn next to an upcoming summit by the Christian Alliance for Orphans. Alliance Member Tiffany Taylor with Orphan Outreach says it’s a way to get the word out about the needs of the orphans around the world. “People found out about us at the Summit, and then the next thing you know, we’re building churches, and we’re making a difference in communities. We’ve got orphanages that now have support and children that are now coming to know the Lord.” The Alliance’s mission connects need with action and the hope of Christ. “The theme of the Summit is ‘In You, the fatherless find compassion.’ It’s so important that God’s people understand how it takes them to make a difference.” Taylor says support is critical. “The economy is affecting ‘the least of these’ in a major way. Now, more than ever, we need ministries, churches, [and] lay people that have that tug on their heart to come and make a difference for orphan children.” Registration is open now.
