Thousands displaced in Nigeria battle

Nigeria (MNN) — Nigeria continues to route Islamic militants out of the north, but the fighting has displaced thousands. There are some conflicting reports over the nature of the fighting and whether or not it is sectarian. Evangelist Sammy Tippit has trained church leaders in Nigeria and still has ties to those he worked with. When asked if he thought believers were the initial target of the violence, he said, “I think that what is taking place right now is aimed at more than the Christians. The Christians are part of what’s happening, but it’s aimed at the government as well–at the institutions, because this particular group is really wanting Nigeria to be a Muslim country.” Tippit urges believers to follow the way of Christ because the extremists “are really intent on crushing any kind of Christian movement in those states, and in those areas especially in northern Nigeria. We need to pray for God to intervene, for God to change the hearts of those who are intent on doing evil.” Tippit says this time is a challenge to ministry. “When there is persecution, it doesn’t hurt the church: it strengthens the church. When believers are scattered, then they plant churches in new locations, and the church actually grows.”

World hunger reaches all-time high

International (MNN) — The number of people going hungry everyday has reached one billion for the first time in recorded history, according to Food for the Hungry. World leaders discussed spending 20 billion dollars in the next three years to confront the issue. However, they agree the ultimate goal is to get farmers in each country on their feet and providing enough crops. Until then, these people must be fed. Homeless migrants hear the Gospel

United Arab Emirates (MNN) — As jobs are lost due to the economic downturn, migrant workers in the United Arab Emirates are finding hope in Jesus Christ. Malcolm of Faith Comes By Hearing says pastors are using audio Bibles to reach both the employed and the unemployed. “Nobody has really taken the time to spend with them, to share with them. Bible Society pastors are dealing with the workers that have lost their jobs and lost the roof over their heads. They’re showing Christ’s love to them not only physically, but spiritually, and they’re getting remarkable results.” Pray that the outreach will have an impact far beyond the UAE, as workers return to their home countries in South Asia. “The key thing is that when those guys are to the point where they can return to their home countries, they’re taking their new-found faith with them. And they’re taking it with an excitement and exuberance. They want to go back and share with their villages and their families.”

Unrest prevents mission trip to China

Vietnam (MNN) — Because of recent riots in Urumqi, China, a short-term mission trip there has been rerouted to Vietnam. Buckner International had planned to send a team to China August 30 - September 9. However, with over 150 killed in the riots, Buckner realized the area was unsafe. Instead, the individuals who are registered can fly to Vietnam, or they can receive a refund. This will be Buckner’s first trip to Vietnam. Pray for the teams eyes to be opened to needs of this area.

Door open for the Gospel in Slovakia

Slovakia (MNN) — Only a few thousand evangelical believers live in Slovakia, where Greater Europe Mission missionaries train youth leaders. Linda Shattuck says there’s an opening for the Gospel, and more workers are needed. “In the last 10 years, Slovakia has gone through the changes that the United States has gone through since the 1920s. In a short amount of time, their whole society has turned upside down. They used to be a communist country, and now they’re becoming more capitalistic, and there’s been a void. People are really seeking.” Shattuck requested prayer for more cooperation between evangelical denominations in Slovakia, as well as for courage for Christians who face opposition to the Gospel. “Pray that they would be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit, but also bold and not afraid that their friends are going to think badly of them or that they might be penalized at work.”
