The shock came, not in the fact that he signed it, but in what the President said in his comments.

Pakistan (MNN) — 105 people are dead following a car bomb attack in a Peshawar market in Pakistan. This eclipsed a peace mission by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The insecurity concerns many Christians, including evangelist Sammy Tippit who does work in Pakistan. Did the recent car bombing affect their work? “All ministry has been affected by the bombing. Any time something like that takes place, it causes people to stand back and re-evaluate everything because lives are at stake.” While Christians with his organization weren’t hurt in the most-recent bombing, Tippit says Christians are at risk every day. “Leading up to this, for the past few years there have been Christians who have lost their lives directly because of threats against the Gospel going forth. And it has been a very difficult thing. The people that we have worked with and partner with have had their lives threatened.” Pray for believers doing the Lord’s work, because their lives are on the line.

Uzbekistan (MNN) — Pastors and leaders in Uzbekistan’s Baptist Union went to trial over false charges related to their children’s camp ministry. Bob Provost with Slavic Gospel Association says, despite all evidence to the contrary, a judge convicted them. “The sentence eliminates the president of the Baptists, the director of the camp, and the book keeper; [they] would be out of ministry. Also, they would have to pay $14,000.” Provost says they don’t want to let the conviction stand, so they are planning to appeal within 10 days. The move is so hostile, it’s raising more questions. “The camp director believes that the authorities want to change the leadership of the Baptist Union and somehow gain control over the churches.” The bottom line? Pray. “We have a government that wants to eliminate evangelical Christianity from their soil. The Bible says that God can change the heart of a king. If He can change the heart of a king, He can change the heart of a judge.”

USA (MNN) — As 2009 heads into the homestretch, Ron Hutchcraft Ministries looks to spread its wings in 2010. President Ron Hutchcraft describes a successful summer for RHM’s On Eagles Wings ministry. “The only thing we can say is: the Lord our God is mighty to save.” At eight reservations in the southwestern United States, 600 Native American youth gave their lives to Christ. “It was amazing to watch the surge of young people coming to Christ invited not by me, but invited to Christ by their own generation.” Hutchcraft says high rates of suicide are typical among Native youth. Pray for those who gave their hearts to Christ this summer. “They are surrounded by traditional religion, by almost-epidemic drug and alcohol levels, and families that are too broken to be supportive in many cases. It is a toxic spiritual environment in which to try to grow up in Christ. Pray that God will grow them into leaders for Christ who can turn the tide in their generation”

USA (MNN) — Who is the most likely to take a stand against poverty? College students. The InterVarsity Christian Fellowship Urbana 09 conference now includes a Poverty Track headed up by Scott Bessenecker. The point of the track is “to engage students missionally around the ideas of poverty and the ugly things that come out of that kind of desperation. Students have the kind of gall and mobility and idealism to make a change.” Students at Urbana 09 who follow the Poverty Track will get hands-on training, hear from great teachers, and meet with about 2,800 other students. “There are not a lot places where North American university students can get together in those kinds of numbers and hear from world-class teachers on issues that are pertinent to the mission of the Church and addressing and eradicating poverty.” Head to our Web site to learn more about the Poverty Tracks and Urbana 09 (Story 4 – October 30, 2009).
