What is CompleteMovies.com and why do I think that the police will be knocking at my door?

Here’s my first distraction, while I was chasing the Google rabbit down the rabbit hole by following up on all of the interest to this site for the Matrix Revolutions on DVD , I saw CompleteMovies.com listed as one of the “Sponsored Links.”

What is this about and how can they say that you can “Download all the lastest movies!”

Well, I checked the COMPLETEMOVIES.com Disclaimer/Terms of service for my answer.

Lo and behold:

4. ENROLLMENT IN THE SERVICE

… To begin the enrollment process, you must complete the Service registration process located on our web site at http://www.COMPLETEMOVIES.COM/register.html (“COMPLETEMOVIES Site”). You will only be charged for the effort it took us to compose a webpage helping you to comfortably find and download movies online and to have all the tools needed in one place. We do not claim to own any software provided to our members. Any of the software provided could be obtained for free at the owners’ respective sites. We do not promote illegal activity and respect copyright laws. We cannot be held liable for whatever you do once you start using peer-to-peer software available in our member’s section. You understand, that no files can be downloaded directly from this site in any way, shape, or form.

[emphasis mine]

Basically, it’s a pre-paid peer-to-peer file sharing site. Thus, claim “Download all the lastest movies!” is BARELY legal.

that is actually completely true. I just saw the site advertised on moviemistakes.com and saying that it is legal is just pathetic. I typed completemovies.com in google to find more information about this site, and I got here. I don’t care about the police knocking at my door, but that company sure as hell can be sued for advertising illegal use of their software… can’t they? I sure hope so. They also check availability to illegally ripped movies that you can download using their software. Somebody get their lawyer!

It’s actually also advertisted by shopping.comcast.net ( http://shopping.comcast.net/xMDS-The-Lord-of-the-Rings~PD-320097588097 ) all the way at the bottom of the page.

I won’t say I don’t do illegal downloads sometimes (or all the time) but this has to be stopped. Trying to make money over it is just over the line.

Posted by: soulshaker84 at January 14, 2004 02:07 PM

What kind of movies do you have? All of your movies are unsupported. I tried to download movie, “E L F”; it took 78 hours it was still 45%, and when I tried to play it back, error came. It won’t play. Same thing with the others-it takes 3 days just to download 1 movie and they are all unsupported by your program. I just wasted a lot of my time doing this. I don’t want to be a member anymore. I would rather pay something that I know that I will be happy. I am frustrated and disgusted with your program. I want to cancel my membership fee.

Posted by: resty reyes at January 21, 2004 10:38 PM

Well their homepage (http://www.completemovies.com) says they are not taking new members, but an alternate link (that i found on filedoney, http://www.completemovies.com/index1.html), allows you to sign up no problem.

Interestingly, there is no “terms” page, the page has been removed and there is no link. The FAQ page does not address the legality of the website, however the home page says “100% legal”.

Their privacy page is likewise lacking, and although they state that all personal information “is secure”, which it’s not clear what that means, it certainly wont be secure from a court ordered subponea.

Posted by: some guy in the UK at March 1, 2004 09:46 PM

I too have recently signed upto complete Movies, and all i can say is ‘what a waste of £11.

it took 5 hours to download School of rock and the dam thing said there was a file error!

just a complete waste of time - i also have found out that you can download the bit Tolorant thingy for free from shareware.com and complete movies charged for it -6 years as an Internet user and this is the first time i have bin caught out - dam - should have known better.

BE WARNED.

I just came within one mouseclick of signing up at completemovies.com when 2 or 3 of my remaining braincells reminded me “..if it sounds too good to be true…” so I bailed out and did a Google search for “completemovies legal” and it brought me here..Thanks guys, you just saved me $20!

Posted by: Tony B at April 16, 2004 11:25 PM

I’d like to add completemovies piracy because when I did a google search, nothing came up.

Thanks.

Has anyone gotten there money back?

Posted by: lisa at May 1, 2004 08:26 PM

You may want to try movielink.com, it is a site which offers REAL and LEGAL downloadable movies, full screen, pay-per-view (24 hours to completely view movies from the time you start viewing). The prices vary depending upon the age of the movie, newest movies are up to $4.95. Older movies are offered at as low as $0.99. The quality was OK, not particularly impressive, however, the interface was simple and worked well.

Posted by: stan at May 3, 2004 04:07 PM

Yeah, they got me for $20 too. Whatever you do, stay away from this SCAM!!!

Nothing works, and who wants to wait for DAYS (yes, DAYS) for one movie to download! I hope somebody takes them to court for everything they’ve got. True ripoff artists!

I am thankful for a website like this. I just wish I would have found it sooner. Now, I’m a little bit wiser and more wary. Thanks, Anthony.

I JUST JOINED THIS RIPP OFF SITE.
I WENT TO THE SITE THAT WAS ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS.
I FIGURED THERE,S SO MANY ILLEGAL WAS TO DOWN LOAD MOVIES THAT MAYBE SOMEONE HAD DECIDED TO AT

BUT THESE PEOPLE ARE A JOKE.
I AM CANCEALING MY MEMBERSHIP AS SOON AS I,M DONE HERE. I,M ALSO REQUESTING MY MONEY BACK.
I,M DISABLED AND HAVE BEEN HOME BOUND FOR LAST 5 YEARS.
SO I HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THEN GET MY BROTHER WHICH IS A EAT THEM ALIVE LAWYER AND DO WHAT EVER I CAN JUST TO GET UNDER THESE LOW LIFE,S SKIN.
I,LL GIVE THEM ENOUGH TROUBLE IT WILL BE WELL WORTH THE 20 DOLLARS JUST TO PISSSSSSSS THEM OFF.

Wow! I actually was led down this road, because I an .xvid file I couldn’t read. Then, I somehow linked to completemovies.com. I related so well to the previous respondents (e.g. few last brain cells left to question validity of site; just a click away from wasting 20 bucks, etc.) and had to giggle about it. Thanks all for your input. Google rocks, because I did a search on yahoo and only got 1 response that led to to try to buy a $400 Variety.com subscription. Sheesh! Aloha! & Thanks to all!

Posted by: grace at June 21, 2004 04:52 AM

so, does anyone that signed up wanna give their user name and password out so others can sign in for free and take a look around for completemovies.com?

Posted by: Mur at June 23, 2004 01:06 PM

I am so glad that I stumbled across this page.
I had heard of completemovies.com but like so many others, was warned by those last two braincells not to buy into it. Unfortuntely, I have another scammer to add to the list. It is
newmoviesnow.com and while the site leads you to believe you are getting access to ‘1000s of movies for one flat fee’ all it really does is charge you $25 for the Bit Torrent program that you can get for free. I’m pretty upset with myself for getting suckered in but now I will just be more wary in the future.
I might check out movielink.com thanks for the tip.

Posted by: Terie at June 27, 2004 02:22 AM

Just joined completemovies.com 2 days ago and it’s another internet scam. A total rip-0ff. They had actually sent me an advertisement email stating that the downloads were from a dedicated server and not peer-to-peer. That’s a lie. I never got one movie downloaded. I have a T1 line and every time I started a download it would not complete. Even if I had been able to, it would have taken days to get one movie. I’m calling Clikbank after the 4th of July hoilday for a refund, but I doubt that will happen. The only reason I joined was because I thought it was a leagal service with a dedicated server. You can add “24/7 Movie Downloads” to your list of scams also. Wish I had found this web site earlier.

Posted by: Boomer at July 3, 2004 11:05 AM

I wish I had done some research on this site before I paid my 20.00 A. dollars.I have just spent the last 2 days trying to download a movie. After about 8 hrs I was about 30% complete. What about the 1 to 2 hour download as advertised.Liars.
i guess it’s Buyer beware

Posted by: the latest sucker at July 9, 2004 07:28 PM

Usually clickbank is reasonable when it comes to refunds. Just send them an email stating that the vendor has not offered what was promised and that you need YOUR MONEY BACK RIGHT AWAY!. You have 90 days. I got mine back.

Posted by: Hasan at July 10, 2004 02:21 AM

I have downloaded 4 movies from this site. The are as follows: starkey and hutch, cheaper by the dozen , van helsing and my date with ted hamiliton (picture quality of helsing and s+h are slightly grainy and the other 2 are of very good quality). I found this site quite annoying because it took hours/days to download each film (via broadband connection). Also, when I had downloaded the cheaper by the dozen film, it was not a english copy - it was a german copy!!!!!
Recently , when I have tried to download any other film, error messages keep appearing. I agree with other people comments - This is a BIG SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Unhappy uk at July 11, 2004 10:13 PM

I actually got sucked into this as well, but unlike the poor suckers I have been reading about I got a refund to my credit card. For some unknown reason my mind thought hey save the url of the secure server I purchased from. So I did a whois after I found that it was nothing like the advertisement and it in turn was a peer to peer program, amongst being illegal. In addition I think my top dl rate was 20kb/s.

For all that are interested in getting your money back this is the info on the bank that was completely coopertive.
Just call the number.Good Luck.

Its Scandalous! Don’t get me wrong I know there are plenty of P2P sharers out there which is fine, but for a company to falsify people and charge them for what is free is down right wrong! If any of you guys wanna help me, we can take them to the cleaners!

I just got swallowed into the pit of sharedmovies.com while looking for info on an old TV series. After joining and realising I’d been dupped did a google on the name and found this place and the other poor gits that had been suckered.

What I’d suggest doing is this: sharedmovies has pay-per-click advertising on google so I’m just gonna click away until I reckon I’ve got my $20 (or £13 as it will be after the exchange rate) back - that and send out an email to everyone in my address book giving them a link to google with the querystring and ask them to click on the add and pass the email on to all their friends…

complete movies got us too! we payed by visa card and we intend to get our transaction disputed, this will stop them getting the money!
we also thought that the downloads were 1-2 hours in reality, 180 hours is closer to the truth on broadband.also i found that the movies would not play and i had to download a different type of media player to play the movie!

Looks like a grand place for new scams.

Posted by: Sparky at August 20, 2004 09:25 AM

I got this place to work pretty good, It took some time to figure it out but after I tweeked some things and opened ports or forward ports I was getting close to 200 kbps download which was fast and 25-30 upload which isnt bad,I was getting movies in several hours. I lost my password though I caught a virus and formatted my hard drive and forgot to save it so I cant use that site again would like to though. If anybutty wants to swap how toos for a password I can get u up and running fast..But dial up will always be slow but you can get some performance, faster connections are way better.

Posted by: Jennie at August 29, 2004 12:43 PM

It sounds to me as if you guys are all OLD and want to pay someone anyone to do what you should be doing for free!!!

It is people like you who motivate the scammers into setting up scams like this one..

If you use a credit-card with purchase protection you should ALWAYS be OK on the net… but don’t expect to be able to DL unlimited movies for $20!!!!!! That’s never gonna happen..

As well.. how they gonna make DL’s happen faster than your connection supports??

Forget downloading and buy LEGIT from your LOCAL store..

WHO CARES IF A MOVIE IS MORE THAN A MONTH OLD BY THE TIME YOU SEE IT?????

I BET YOU AINT SEEN ALL THE BEST MOVIES OUT THERE ANYWAY!!!!

STOP THIS LATEST = BETTER faster harder more malarky and THINK before you blunder into territory unknown…

There is a whole bunch of BAD stuff that can happen to your computer if you use questionable ethics on THE WWW AND THE NET as a whole… And it’d be ALL YOUR OWN FAULT!!!

You go opening ports and running executables… you’ll be fine…. NOT.

It should serve as a $20 lesson to you… and as I just said..

THAT AINT MUCH TO PAY!!

Posted by: WARY at August 31, 2004 06:44 AM

This was so stupid of me that I even laughed when I found it was also p2p freeware. Interestingly both sites use Clikbank and charge identical subscription rates. Could there be a link between these two fraudulent operations?, I think we should be told.

I notified AOL about the problem and asked them to post a notice since they recommended it to my daughter(at least she thinks that is how she got involved).

I notified the clickbank.com as I really don’t know if they realize how dangerous this makes peole….!

Thanks again for all your notices and comments.

I too paid, and got for my money some links to torrent sites and a bit torrent program.
I have got my money back from them.
Their bit torrent program is useless, slows down my machine.
I found by searching a better version of the bit torrent program (loads out there for free) and used some of the free sites.
things to take time to download, you are dependant on how many seeders have the file, and how many leechers downloading it. It took over 24 hours to download a film. But it does speed up after a while, and I was getting up to 60kbps download speed.
Unfortunately as this is not a “strictly” legal practice and we all seem to want something for nothing, then we cant expect to be downloading loads of movies really quickly.
But I have been very happy with bit torrent for downloads.
Just beware of these websites luckily this one you can get your money back from.

Posted by: foxxyloxxy at October 12, 2004 06:51 PM

Well all i can say to you guys is shame on you for even considering this 200% illegal website and you can only blame yourself.
I suggest contact clickbank and get your money back to the people who were just crying about wasted money.
Also, what is wrong with the Bit-Torrent protocol? There are thousands of sites that host torrents and suprnova.org is one of them…maybe try lokitorrent.com too that is a very good site…
Peer-2-peer is not as bad as you guys think it is…only the programs you use or the websites that host these ridiculously foolish ones aren’t good.

You guys need to seriously shoot yourselves in the balls for even looking twice at this kind of idiocy because there is a scammer sitting in his chair at the moment laughing at all the silly hoes who went and signed up,sure some got a refund but this guy is still probably very rich now.

I wasn’t sucked into this but i wanna contact The Federation Against Copyright Theft about this just to get some more attention focused on this site because i don’t like to see the internet mis-used for illegal downloads (fair enough but…) that don’t work!! and you have to pay for!!

Crazyness…

Additionally, they give very little information about how to reach them via telephone or personally. I personally wouldn’t give my hard earned money that God has entrusted me with to a company with such questionable ethics. Just my opinion… Thanks for the website!

Posted by: chance490 at January 4, 2005 07:15 PM

All the sites that advertize free movie downloads are simply trying to make money on the illegal activities of other people. In addition they sell you free software and information that is available at no cost, using the fact that newcomers into file sharing simply don’t know how to find proper information themselves. They also smartly promote themselves on other sites, so search engines pick them first when you search for movies, music, or software. May be they don’t do anything illegal, but this is at least unethical.

Anyway, if you are really interested how file sharing community works and how to really download things for free, visit this site: http://www.emule-project.net/ Read their FAQ and look at their forums. This is not commercial site.

All these sites are simply trying to make money on illegal activities of other people.

I almost got caught by downloadshield. I looked up clickbank and i found this site. What does Downloadshield really do anyway?

Posted by: alim at January 31, 2005 03:04 PM

Well, THANKYOU for having this page :))))))

My partner found “www.downloadshield.com” whilst searching for Hide & Seek on Google.com - it came up on the right hand side tempting us with virtually free downloads of all the latest Games & Movies!

I had a look at the site and was concerned about the authenticity so I looked on google for “who owns downloadshield.com” and found you ;)

Many thanks for saving us the heartache and most of all the money!!!

Keep this thread active for as long as possible so others may learn to be wary of scammers like this and hopefully close them down :))))))

Cheers

hey everybody, i goggled sharemovies.com and came across this site too. i’ve been using p2p software since Napster in college, all without paying a red cent, so i thought i’d share a few secrets with all of you.

DON’T PAY ANYONE ANYTHING FOR SOMETHING THAT IS ALREADY FREE. all these sites are run by clowns who are deceiving innocent users. they are nothing more than thinly veiled scams and are absolutely illegal. anything that claims to offer “100% legal downloads” automatically sends off red flags. there are a few official and legitimate movie download sites, but none of the ones experienced by people here are. i don’t know what software they use, but my guess is something already free, and it just connects you to existing p2p networks, that are also free. so, you are paying for nothing more than some idiot to tell you what software to use. you may or may not get technical support as promised, but there is ample documentation on the web for free anyway.

first of all, FORGET KAZAA (it is loaded with spyware), Kazaa-lite, or any of the dozen post-Napster clones!! they are slow and full of junk and i’ve gotten many intentionally mislabeled files that are potentially dangerous trojans or worms (.exe files disguised as mp3’s or jpegs).

BitTorrent is what all the geeks use (me included). i’m on DSL and can usually get a feature-length almost DVD quality movie (700-1.4 gigs, widescreen Divx encoded) in as fast as 5 hours sometimes, though on average 15-20 hrs. the more popular a file is, the FASTER it downloads. (takes too long to explain the technical aspects). here’s a brief overview, but not that good for novice users:
http://www.bittorrent.com/introduction.html

BitTorrent is just software, so it’s legal. what’s not legal, though is downloading movies and music you haven’t paid for. (but anyone who has used Morpheus, Napster, or Kazaa to get copyrighted material has already crossed this boundary). i’m not advocatig piracy, just giving out information.

First, you go to a website and download a small file (say South-Park-episode-809.torrent). this file is an index of all the places that have the file. once you start up BitTorrent, it goes out and looks for people sharing bits of the file. it’s really great! Try it out.

goggle “how to use bittorrent” to get a basic idea, then just play with it. places where you can find indexes:

http://www.torrentspy.com
http://www.novatina.com
http://www.torrentreactor.net
http://www.isohunt.com

you can also go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bittorrent for more info.

if you use Firefox, i wrote a lot of plugins for these sites. get them from my site at http://www.sugarcloud.com/plugins/

happy downloading!!

I’d like to add www.iwannadownload.com/ to this list of so called legal download sites. Here’s the deal. I was performing a search on a particular movie, and noticed a website addy as the person’s user name. Being the ever so curious one that I am, I typed it into my browser. They do not sell P2P clients, however, they want you to pay for access to files which they claim are virus free, verified, and not mis-labeled. I personally did not spend any money on this, as I have none to spare on such things, but I just wanted to make everyone here aware of the site in case no one knew about it.

what sharedmovies.com pushes is illegal. They get around it by saying that the FILE FORMAT .mp3 is completely legal. Yes, the file format is legal; however, that does not excuse a site pretending to be a legitimate site like itunes or something, then scamming money.

do not give sharedmovies.com any money, it is a ripoff. if you do a whois lookup on the domain name, you will find the stupid guy running the scam is in Belize.

Subject: I would like to request a refund for this product.

Hi there. I joined a website and paid a subscription to download movies. The website implied that movies would be downloaded directly from their site, alas once you have paid and get in to the site you find it is a peer to peer download service! The movies don’t work when downloaded and they take forever to download!
After trying to visit the site again it says that the site is down for maintenance and NO NEW MEMBERS are being taken at this time. I did a search on Google and sure enough, they have made this claim about new members ages ago, but they still ARE taking on new clients. I think a cookie lets them know when a new user has paid and tries to revist the original site.

Also of interest is this article about them (AIRON Corporation) They are obviously conmen and I wish a refund please because (a) it didn’t work (b) they are NOT what they claimed to be © what I think they are doing is illegal, and I don’t want any part of this.

I didn’t wait the 2 days or send them an email because of the information I read about them in this article > http://www.consumerwebwatch.org/dynamic/e-commerce-investigation-in-search-of-the-humvee.cfm

They are obviously a bunch of crooks!

Please refund my money, thankyou!

Hi,
I joined sharedmovies when I didn’t know anything about downloading. It took days to download movied that do not work. Some are just blank files. I have followed your advice and
a) will try for a refund from clickbank
b) always do a search for info on a site before paying any money
