How Not To Get Sued by the RIAA for File-sharing

To make sure that your name is not on the list mentioned earlier, you probably want to take a look at this list and, oh yeah, stop file-sharing.

[EFF: How Not To Get Sued by the RIAA for File-sharing]

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced on June 25, 2003, that it will begin suing users of peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing systems within the next few weeks. According to the announcement, the RIAA will be targeting users who upload/share "substantial" amounts of copyrighted music. The RIAA has stated that it will choose who to sue by using software that scans users' publicly available P2P directories and then identifies the ISP of each user. Then, using the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), the RIAA will subpoena the ISP for each user's name, address, and other personal information in order to sue that user.

Are you getting sued by the RIAA?

Here is the list to check to see if the RIAA has subpoenaed information about your KAZAA username. I hope that you are NOT on the list...

Sprint PCS to offer public WiFi

Source: GlobeTechnology
Television has a profound effect on the information that I am spoon-fed so I saw the commercials before seeing this article.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Sprint Corp. plans to offer high-speed wireless Internet access in the U.S. for laptops equipped with WiFi by the end of summer, joining a growing number of major phone companies that have embraced the hot technology.
The new service, announced Monday, will let customers connect with the Web whenever they're near one of about 800 "hot spots" around the nation, mostly through roaming agreements with WiFi carriers including Airpath Wireless and Wayport.
WiFi, short for wireless fidelity, radiates an Internet connection that multiple computers can share within 300 feet from any transmitter.

More stuff about Pixel Art

I am really going to figure this out. (But I cannot draw, so it will probably be ugly for a while)

I have checked out some stuff from http://www.ourcall.org and have gotten the PixelationZoom tool from www.blackeye.org.

Another tool that I have started to look into is the GIMP, now that's cool stuff.

I am looking into Pixel Art now, BUT this is...

As I roamed the web tonight, looking for examples and tutorials on creating pixel art, I ran into the REAL world's smallest website, weighing in at 16 pixels by 16 pixels.

First I said, "Cool!', then I said, "Huh??", then I said,"Cool", again.

It's a novel idea, but I don't see 16x16 in the future of my projects.

I Am Not Really Sure What Jesus Would Drive

I really don't know what the kind of vehicle Jesus Christ would drive, but these folks seem to know...
What Would Jesus Drive?

Now, these folks are not happy about the WWJD folk's decision on the vehicular choice of the Risen Lord and Savior....
Welcome to Sport Utility Vehicle Owners of America

SUVOA has started a petition to WWJD:

We are joining together and asking you to stop your personal attacks against those of us who drive SUVs. It is shameful and offensive when you imply that God disapproves of us or that we support terrorists.

SUVOA is also pitching an ad campaign, "What Would Jesus (Rivera) Drive?" to counter the "What Would Jesus Drive?" ads.

Hmmm...what WOULD Jesus drive? All I know is that the scripture tells us that Jesus only spoke what He heard the Father say and that the only did what He say the Father do...

28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.

John 8:29-30 KJV

SO the really question becomes, what would God drive?

God doesn't need to drive anything, He's always everywhere at all times...

7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
John 139:7-10

My take on the issue is that Christians should demonstrate wisdom, prudence, moderation, and faithfulness without using Jesus' name as a marketing tool, in this instance.

True, actual facts ARE stacked up against large SUVs in the areas of safety and fuel consumption, but at the same time would Christ and the 12 disciples all fit in a Toyota Prius?

Family sues over funeral hell prediction

Source: Reuters
One has to be very careful with the words that he uses while preaching at a funeral.

SANTA FE, N.M (Reuters) - A New Mexico family is suing their local Catholic church over a funeral Mass in which the priest allegedly said their relative was only a middling Catholic and going straight to hell. Lawyers for the family of Ben Martinez said on Tuesday they had filed a lawsuit in June against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe and one of its priests.

Court papers filed last month say that Reverend Scott Mansfield said at Martinez's funeral last year that the deceased was "living in sin", "lukewarm in his faith" and that "the Lord vomited people like Ben out of his mouth to hell".

Auto Death Hit 12-year High in 2002

Source: Reuters
I recently moved from an SUV to a small car. Thank God for that.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of people killed in sport utility rollover crashes rose 14 percent last year as total highway deaths hit a 12-year high at nearly 43,000, the U.S. government reported on Thursday.

The Transportation Department also reported that car crash injuries fell to an all-time low in 2002. Child and pedestrian deaths also went down as did fatalities involving large trucks.

But in 2002, SUV rollover fatalities jumped to more than 2,400 victims, an increase of 14 percent, the government said. Sixty-one percent of all SUV fatalities involved rollovers.

Microsoft warns of critical Windows flaw (except for Win ME)

Now... Why does Windows ME have to be the only platform that is not affected by this flaw.

Windows ME? Give me a break.

The software giant issued a patch Wednesday morning to plug a critical security hole that could allow an attacker to take control of computers running any version of Windows except for Windows ME.

A group of Polish hackers and independent security consultants, known as the Last Stage of Delirium, discovered the flaw and worked with Microsoft to fix it.

"It should be emphasized that this vulnerability poses an enormous threat, and appropriate patches provided by Microsoft should be immediately applied," the group said in an advisory posted to its Web site. The group said that programs designed to exploit the vulnerability will likely be available on the Internet soon.

Blogchatter - Realtime Weblog Aggregation

While stumbling through the recessed caverns of the Internet, I tumbled gently into this hole named BlogChatter.

I wonder-ment filled my eyes, profound words escaped me and with all of the strength that I could muster seeing that I was viewing something too wonderful to describe, I estatically proclaimed, "Cool!"

I am usually the last to know, but this is a must see for those into watching XML-RPC pings fly by.

You would have to know that as a child I found sitting on the front porch and watching the traffic pass by as a delight, so this more that satisfied my longing to observe the inner workings of the internet blogging machine.

Just go see it for yourself.

Didn't pay attention during Spanish -- D'oh!

Seems that my blog, inthefaith.com, caused a stir in the pro-homosexual community back in mid-June. I have used Babelfish to translate the comment that the poster made, however, I can only guess as to which blog entry they are refering.

Hmmm....

Here is the comment from the blog - El Blog de Elenis

And here is the rough translation by Babelfish.Altavista.com

God, how she makes me anger homofobia... *trata to control * Disgust, those people make sick to me, sincerely... and what I found yesterday already she was too much: http://www.inthefaith.com/
Someday I will take my katana and I will leave to kill homofóbicos that way -__-.

Posted by: Deby on June 12, 2003 11:56 p.m.

Well, the log entry closest to June 12, 2003 on inthefaith.com that was related to homosexuality was this article: "Lesbians Claim Christian Beliefs Not Important" which was based on an article from the American Daily website. The writers at American Daily are quite straight forward in what they report, so I do not consider this article homophobic, nor do I consider the doctor in this story as a homophobe.

Already being hacked? or attempts to hack the box

I was checking the server logs yesterday and I found some failed attempts for a certain IP address trying to compromise this webserver.

If you have done your homework, the hack is an attempt to gain admin priviledges on a web server by exploiting a flaw in the FrontPage Extensions and IIS.

FrontPage Extensions???? I haven't used that stuff since 1998.
IIS???? This is not a Microsoft Web Server.

Well, come to find out that this is really just the old school 2001, Nimda Virus, still looking for web servers to attack.
It's searching for _vti_bin/owssvr.dll and /Msoffice/ cltreq.asp in particular

Here is some info that I found helpful @ TruSecure.com.

I have realized that I have not created a favicon.ico for this blog or for inthefaith.com. I really need to do that as there are some wonderful people who have thought enough of these blogs to bookmark them.

How cool is that?

I keep you posted on the favicon.ico development.

Standards-based Replacement for target="_blank" in External Links

This article shows a nice JavaScript implementation that validates in Strict HTML 4.01 or Script XHTML 1.0 essentially replacing the need to use target="_blank" to open an new window for external links.

Love it or hate it, many authors prefer to have links that are external to their sites open up in new browser windows. This is typically done through the use of target attributes on those links. However, as you may be aware, the target attribute is not valid for links when authoring in the Strict flavors of either HTML 4.01 or XHTML 1.0.

This is on my TODO list for all of my future web development stuff. Way cool!

My Personality Assessement

Found a link to Crown Financial Ministry's Personality Assessment, took the test and here are the results.

General Description
As an Analyzer, you tend to seek perfect outcomes in all of your plans and projects. In many situations, you "take things apart" in your mind and think about ways to do them better. You excel at this kind of mental examination, but you may tend to see family and friends as "projects," rather than as people.

Typical Areas of Strength
Analyzers, like you, tend to be analytical, logical, direct, confident, and they like new challenges. They excel at seeing the larger vision, creating efficient methods and procedures, and listening carefully for the facts.

Typical Areas of Struggle
Due to your tendency to focus on tasks, you sometimes show a lack of sensitivity to the feelings of family members and friends. When you are sharply focused on a task, you may come across as being overly critical, judgmental, blunt, or impatient with others.

Your Preferred Activities
To maximize your talents, you look for situations in which you can offer logical solutions to complex challenges, and you evaluate and make the necessary changes to assure the desired outcome.

Your Communication Style
You tend to provide insights and direction by teaching, managing, clarifying, and advising.
